How to Mount Your Camera

1. Mark Position

Place the mounting template where you want the camera. For wall mounting, drill four holes through four circles on your mounting template.

2. Mount Base or Pole Mounting

For wall mounting, insert four anchors into the holes and use the self-tapping screws to affix the camera base over the anchors.

If you mounted it on the wall

Remove the screws from the anchor. Then you can take your camera off the wall.

How to use VIGI cameras with other NVR brands or NAS

The VIGI cameras work with VIGI NVR as well as other NVR brands or NAS for easier batch access and management. It is recommended to use the VIGI cameras with the VIGI NVR. For other NVR brands, make sure they support ONVIF and RTSP protocols. Here we will show you how to use VIGI cameras with other NVR brands.

Step 1: Power on your cameras and connect them to the same network as your NVR.

Step 2: Activate the cameras using the VIGI Security Manager or VIGI App.

1. Download the VIGI Security Manager on your windows computer at https://www.tp-link.com/download-center/

2. Install the VIGI Security Manager and open it.

3. Go to Settings > Discovered Devices. Cameras on the same network as your computer can be automatically discovered.

4. Click + Add to activate your discovered cameras by setting passwords.

5. Follow the instructions to add your cameras.

Step 3: Refer to the NVR’s User Manual to add cameras.

We will show you some basic parameters that it may require to connect the VIGI camera to your NVR.

1. The IP address of the camera.

Open VIGI Security Manger and go to Settings > Device > Device List > My Devices > Settings icon of the camera > Network Settings > Connection.

For some NVRs, you’ll need to modify the IP address of the VIGI camera to the same network segment as the NVR for successful adding.

2. The ports for standard ONVIF and RTSP protocols.

Please select Onvif protocols to add VIGI cameras.

RTSP Service Port: 554

3. The username/password of the camera.

Username: admin

Password: It is set when you activated the camera. If you forget it, please refer to the link to reset the password.

What should I do if VIGI camera is not found?

This article is to solve the problem that VIGI camera is not found. Please check the steps below:

Step 1. Confirm that the camera is powered up.

The camera should be powered up via 12V DC adapter or PoE (802.3af/at). The IR LED will turn on for 20 seconds once the camera is powered on.

Step 2. Confirm that the camera is connected to your network properly.

The camera should be connected to network devices via Ethernet cable.

Step 3. Make sure your device is on the same network as the camera.

Step 4. Reboot your network devices including router and refresh to discover your cameras again.

Step 5. Try other methods to discover devices.

You can try to discover devices via VIGI Security Manager, VIGI NVR or VIGI App.

How to Verify Fake Micro SD Cards When Using with VIGI Cameras

Note:

A security camera that works with a standalone microSD card is primarily designed to store motion-activated recordings or short video clips of movements with local storage, which offers a cost-effective alternative to the subscription-based cloud storage. However, users may run into issues like the camera is unable to overwrite recordings, the SD card becomes full and stops recording or the SD card cannot be formatted by the camera App, etc. These kinds of problems might be caused by the fake SD card.

Micro SD Card and fake SD Card

An SD Card is a small electronic storage medium used by a plethora of storage devices including smartphones, games devices, camcorders, and cameras. Most of the smartphones and security cameras are using the microSD card.

The TP-Link camera supports a microSD card with up to 512GB capacity. If the remaining space of an SD card is less than 500MB or 5% of the total capacity before the first insertion of the camera, it would be impossible to record. There are different speed specifications for microSD cards and it is recommended to use a card with Class 10 or UHS 1 speed rating, which requires a minimum writing speed of 10MB/s.

The most common fake microSD card is the fake capacity expanded card, which uses illegal means and tools to make the cards with a small capacity appear larger. For example, a 32GB card is displayed as 128GB on your computer or other devices. This kind of card is usually having a lower price than the official quality goods. Since the capacity is Manual deceived by the illegal means and tools so that the space beyond the original capacity cannot be used normally.

If the stored file exceeds the actual capacity, the file will be unavailable. Our camera recognizes the microSD card and will format it in Fat32 format and creates index files to save your video data. If your SD card is an expanded card, it will not be formatted successfully and will not work properly on our camera.

We do not support the card due to the particularity of the monitoring camera; we need to ensure that the SD card can work stably for a long time. And since camera data is relatively important, data loss or failure to write data can have a significant impact.

Note: For VIGI cameras, it is required to format the SD card on the VIGI app for local recording.

Types of Fake SD cards

When it comes to counterfeit memory cards, you will find some different types of them like listed below:

1. Reduced Read / Write Speed: You buy an SD card that shows something like “maximum 95 MB/s read and 90 MB/s write speed” and a “V30” label that is supposed to guarantee a minimum writing speed of 30 MB/s. But when copying a file using a fast SD card reader, you might not even get more than 5-10 MB/s.

2. Reduced Capacity: The SD card might report a large capacity when inserted in your computer, camera, or storage device, while it contains only a very small part of the overall capacity. This happens because the microchip (a tiny part of the SD card that is responsible for reporting the total amount of storage available) within the card has been reprogrammed to report a different size to the host. 4. Unrealistic Capacity: There are memory cards that advertise completely unrealistic storage sizes. For example, if you search online for microSD cards, you may find cards with capacities as large as 2TB, however, such capacities do not yet exist.

5. Bogus / Non-Working: Some SD cards are sold at incredibly low prices by unknown sellers and may just don’t work.

As you can see from the earlier section, the issues can range from getting very slow speeds to data loss and unusable SD cards. The problem with fake SD cards with reduced capacity is that when users go over a certain capacity, all data from that point on will be corrupted. Everything appears to be working great at first, but troubles may show up in later usage.

How to Identify a Fake SD Card

If you have already purchased an SD card, there are a few things you can inspect and basic tests you can run to identify a fake SD card.

1. Inspect Product Packaging: Make sure the package contains necessary information about the product such as its specifications and card speed, as well as all the appropriate labels, warranty info, and a proper UPC. Users may also verify with SD card manufacturer directly.

2. Test the SD card with third-party software: Make sure you format the SD card before you start this step. How to configure VIGI camera’s exposure parameters

This article discusses how to adjust the exposure parameters of VIGI Cameras using the web interface or VIGI Security Manager to achieve better image quality in different environments.

Exposure refers to the amount of light entering the camera. Overexposure in surveillance images results in a too bright image, while underexposure leads to a dark image that lacks clarity.

Overexposure can generally be divided into overexposure during the day and overexposure at night. Overexposure during the day is mainly caused by backlighting in the scene, while overexposure at night is caused by excessive infrared reflection from objects.

Underexposure, on the other hand, is primarily due to low ambient brightness, resulting in insufficient light entering the camera.

To address the above issues, we can make adjustments through Exposure setting, Prevent Overexposure setting, as well as BLC (Backlight Compensation) and WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) settings to obtain more suitable image effects for specific scenes.

Exposure settings include exposure gain and shutter speed. Higher gain and slower shutter speed allow more light to enter the camera within the same time frame, resulting in a brighter image, and vice versa for a darker image.

Prevent overexposure, the brightness of the infrared illuminator can be adjusted to avoid excessive infrared reflection at night.

In addition, there are WDR settings and BLC settings. WDR processes the dark and bright areas of the image to make the dark areas brighter and the bright areas darker, thus achieving better image quality in environments with high contrast between highlights and shadows. BLC targets specific backlight areas and adjusts the light entering the camera accordingly to achieve the desired image effect.

🟠 Battery cameras can not be installed behind a window/glass if you want to use the “Motion Detection” feature.

Battery cameras use PIR (passive infrared) motion detection, an energy-efficient (saving battery power) technology that captures motions by detecting infrared radiation (radiant heat) emitted or reflected by objects. When the camera is mounted behind a window/glass, infrared radiation does not pass through the window/glass. As a result, the “Motion Detection feature” does not work reliably. If you want the camera to detect motions outside, it is recommended that you mount the camera outside.

Why can’t the battery be charged?

🟠 The following factors may cause charge failure. Please check them one by one:

(1) The charging device is not suitable, or it malfunctions. Please make sure the power adapter and charging cable are in good condition. The power adapter specification is “5V/1.5A”.

(2) The charging port is defective. Possible causes include: the Micro USB cable and the charger or the charging port of the camera are not plugged in properly; there are objects in the charger or the charging port of the camera.

(3) Please confirm whether there are objects in the camera’s charging port or the charger port and clean it before charging.
Please ensure that the Micro USB cable is in good contact with the ports on both ends of the charger and camera.

(4) You can try to connect the Micro USB cable and the charger to other devices (such as mobile phones or computers) to see if they work normally. If anyone doesn’t work, please change to a new one to try again.

(5) The long-time operation leads to charge port oxidation or internal looseness. Please repair or replace the charge port immediately.

(6) The charging cable should not be too long. The required cable length is generally not more than 16 feet (5 m). Please replace the Micro USB cable with a suitable length.

(7) The charging environment is not suitable; excessively high or low temperature makes charging impossible. Please move to a place with an appropriate temperature environment (0°C ~ 45°C) for charging.

Why can’t the battery be used for a long time?

🟠 The battery life mainly depends on the total working duration of the camera. The following factors may lead to fast battery consumption. Please check them one by one:

1. Users frequently view live streams/The camera is frequently activated to record videos.
In order to make the camera work longer, please avoid turning on the live broadcast for a long time.

2. Poor Wi-Fi connection to the camera
If the camera’s Wi-Fi connection is bad or unstable, it will continue to actively search for networks, so the battery will drain quickly.
Please try to place the camera near the Wi-Fi router. Thick walls, bricks, ceramics, electromagnetic equipment, large amounts of liquid, and large metal objects can interfere with Wi-Fi signals. Please try to avoid these objects.

3. Extremely cold weather shortens battery life
The operating temperature of the camera is -10°~45 °C. Please do not place the camera in an extremely cold environment.

4. Night Sight will consume more battery power
When you enable Night Sight, the camera will enter night mode when the light is darker than the threshold (sensitivity level). Camera performance is improved when it is dark.
Therefore, for sharp nighttime images, we don’t recommend disabling it, although it may drain more battery power. But if you still want to disable it, you can tap the camera “Settings” icon > tap “Lighting Settings” > close “Night Sight”.

How can I extend the battery life?

🟠 The battery life is largely determined by the number of recordings and the number and duration of live. Here are the suggestions to extend the battery life:

(1) To reduce false triggers. Change the location or angle of the camera. Please allow us to explain how motion detection works: when the PIR sensor perceives a change in the environment, motion detection will be triggered. The change in the environment can be a moving object, light change, the alternation of hot and cold air, etc. Particularly common false triggers include trees shaking after being blown by the wind, the cold air of the air conditioning, etc.

(2) Set motion detection sensitivity to Low or Medium. After doing that, the distance the PIR sensor can detect will become shorter so that false triggers may be reduced.

(3) Shorten the recording duration of the camera. Currently, the camera-supported recording durations are 10 seconds, 15 seconds, 20 seconds, and automatic (up to 3 minutes). For your reference:

(4) Set Sleep mode. This feature allows you to schedule the working hours for the camera. Whether the camera enters sleep mode on schedule, or you enable Sleep, the camera will be deactivated. Under this condition, the live feed will not be accessed, motion detection (including push notifications, recordings, and camera alarm) will stop working. This can reduce power consumption to save battery life.

(5) If possible, you can try to watch live feeds or adjust camera settings on your mobile phones less frequently.

(6) To avoid or reduce the battery consumption caused by poor network connection. You can place the camera as close to the router as possible, and try to avoid thick walls, bricks, ceramics, electromagnetic wave equipment, a large amount of liquid, and large metal objects.

(7) We suggest that the camera be installed in a suitable temperature environment (14°F~113°F).

(8) It is generally not recommended that you turn off night vision, but if you do not need to monitor at night (watch live and video), you can turn off night vision.

Will Wi-Fi environment affect the camera battery?

🟠 Yes, an unstable or poor network environment will cause the camera to transmit data multiple times, the camera keeps actively searching for the network, or even reconnect to Wi-Fi continuously, which will result in faster battery consumption. Multi-layer concrete walls, brick walls, and overcrowded Wi-Fi channels will cause a bad Wi-Fi environment.

To save the camera’s battery life, please ensure that the network connection is strong.

How to charge the camera?

How to add users or share your camera with another person?

Once you add a camera to the app, you become the admin of the camera. If you want to add an additional user to watch the camera on multiple devices, let’s say, you want to make another person (your family member or your friend) be able to access the camera on his or her phone, you can share your camera with that person.

🚩Note:

The shared user needs to download the app and register a new account first and the shared user will need to select the same country as you when registering.

Please check if shared user is in the same country/region as you. Click your/shared user avatar to go to “Personal information” >> check “Country” to see if you are in the same country.

If not, maybe you/shared user need to delete the account and re-register by selecting the same country/region to make sure you are in the same country. Click “Account security” >> select “Delete”, then you/shared user can re-register.

Step 1 Generate the share QR code of the camera

The camera admin taps the Share icon () on the live window on the homepage or taps the Share button on the Camera Setting page, then taps the Camera sharing button to generate a share QR code of the camera.

Step 2 Scan the share QR code using the shared user’s phone

The shared user taps the + icon () on the top right of the homepage, then taps the Add Friend’s Camera button. He/she can also directly tap the Add Friend’s Camera button from the User page. Then scan the generated share QR code.

Step 3 Accept the camera access request

After successfully scanning the share QR code, the camera admin will receive a guest user request. Accept the guest user request, then the shared user will be able to see the camera on the homepage and access the camera. The Person icon indicates this is a shared camera. The camera admin can check the shared account on the Share page.

Remote Sharing

Step 1 Generate the share QR code of the camera

The camera admin taps the Share icon () on the live window on the homepage or taps the Share button on the Camera Setting page, then taps the Camera sharing button to generate a share QR code of the camera.

Step 2 The camera admin screenshots the share QR code and then sends it to the shared user.

Step 3 The shared user saves the screenshot.

Step 4 Scan the screenshot of the share QR code using the shared user’s phone

The shared user taps the + icon () on the top right of the homepage, then taps the Add Friend’s Camera button. He/she can also directly tap the Add Friend’s Camera button from the User page. Then tap the Picture icon on the top right and then choose the saved screenshot to scan.

Step 5 Accept the camera access request

After successfully scanning the share QR code, the camera admin will receive a guest user request. Accept the guest user request, then the shared user will be able to see the camera on the homepage and access the camera. The Person icon indicates this is a shared camera. The camera admin can check the shared account on the Share page.

How do I set up AlfredCamera?

Our mission is to make home security simple and accessible to everyone. AlfredCamera helps to turn your device or computer into a security camera, and you only need at least two of them to set up your security systems. What devices and systems does AlfredCamera support?

AlfredCamera works on Android devices, iOS devices, computers, and AlfredCam (AC101) (Alfred’s own hardware camera).

To make home security accessible to everyone, we try to make AlfredCamera available on as many smartphone/tablet devices and operating systems as possible. You can connect devices running across Android and iOS systems, use Alfred’s WebCamera / WebViewer, or AlfredCam.

As a rule of thumb, if you can find the AlfredCamera app on the Google Play Store or App Store on your device, it most likely means that the Alfred app can run on your device. However, we do not support any IP cameras or security systems on the market, but you may use AlfredCam, Alfred’s hardware camera.

While Alfred keeps your Events and Moments in the Cloud, we still need some local storage to generate snapshots and perform other basic actions on your device.

Continuous Recording

The Continuous Recording footage is saved on your Camera device instead of in the Cloud. Free users and Premium users have different storage requirements: 

Alfredcam (AC101)

AlfredCam is Alfred’s own hardware camera, which requires an SD card inserted if you want to enable Continuous Recording. On the other hand, there are no other storage requirements if you only use the AlfredCam for Motion Detection. Event (motions triggered) and Moment (manually recorded/saved) videos are stored on Alfred’s Clouds for 7 days or 14 days depending on your subscription status. 

Internet Requirements

1. Not only your Camera and Viewer devices, but AlfredCam also needs internet connections to function

Most of our users connect their Camera devices or AlfredCam to their WiFi at home and use their Viewer devices on mobile or office networks. However, the WiFi signal has a higher chance of being unevenly distributed or inconsistent, so we recommend checking Connection Report or WiFi Signal Strength (for AlfredCam) to see if your WiFi signal needs to be improved. You can also use the WiFi Analyzer app to help find an area with the strongest signal to place your Camera device or AlfredCam.

Data consumption may vary depending on lighting conditions, movement frequencies, and more. While it’s hard to be specific about Alfred’s data consumption, here are some guidelines that might help you:

If you want to get a more accurate idea of how much data your Alfred needs, we recommend that you test Alfred out for a day or two. 

3. Does Alfred work when I’m abroad?

As long as all devices are connected to the internet, Alfred works regardless of the distance between the devices. Make sure your Camera devices have a stable connection and that your Viewer devices are connected to a WiFi network or can access international roaming.

When you’re away from home, don’t forget to keep your Camera devices plugged in.

⚠️ Note: Since Alfred relies heavily on Google’s technology, if the country you’re in doesn’t support Google, Alfred will not be able to function properly.

Create or Log in to your account

If this is your first time using the AlfredCamera app, you will be asked to set up an account. You may sign up with your Google account, Apple ID, or email address to create a new Alfred account. You can see more information on how to set up your Alfred account here.

Connect AlfredCam with your Viewer device

1.Make sure your AlfredCam is plugged into a power source, you should see the Status LED on your AlfredCam is in solid RED 🔴.

2.On your Viewer device, tap “Add a Camera” and select “AlfredCam“
   

3.AFTER the Status LED turns slowly blinking GREEN 🟢, tap “I see the green light blinking“
⚠️ Note: If you do not see the green light blinking, please tap “Not seeing the green light blinking?” and reset your camera with the paper clip by pushing the reset button in for 5 seconds. When you hear a beep from your AlfredCam, please tap “I heard a beep“. Then follow the instructions to retry again.

4.Select your 2.4GHz WiFi network > tap “OK” > enter your network password > tap “Next“
   ⚠️ Note: The Alfred app will only ask for location access during the pair-up process by searching for the WiFi nearby to help pair up devices. If you have privacy concerns, you may choose “Allow once”, and the location access will be automatically de-authorized after the pair-up process is complete.

5.Scan the QR code
A. Hold your camera up to your phone screen with the QR code displaying, and keep 6-12 inches of distance in between.
B. AFTER you hear “QR code scanned“, tap “I heard QR code scanned“. Then wait for a few seconds to complete the setup.⚠️ Note: To avoid glare causing unsuccessful scanning, please remove the transparent sticker on the AlfredCam and adjust the screen brightness.  

6.Once the Status LED turns solid Green 🟢, you’re all set! When prompted on the next screen, follow the instructions to turn on Motion Detection.

What type of SD cards are compatible with AlfredCam?

Choosing the right SD card for your AlfredCam is crucial to ensure reliable and efficient storage of video footage. With so many options on the market, it can be difficult to determine which ones are compatible with your device.

The following table provides a list of recommended SD cards that have been extensively tested and found to be the most compatible and reliable options for your AlfredCam.

⚠️ Note: Storage support ranges from 4GB to 256GB in FAT-32 format. Proper formatting is crucial for optimal performance, so it is recommended to ensure the SD card is correctly formatted before use

How to reboot or factory reset AlfredCam?

Reboot AlfredCam 

Reboot Remotely 

1.Tap the Camera’s settings wheel 

2.Scroll down and tap “Reboot Camera”

3.Confirm by tapping “Reboot”

4.Your camera will be temporarily disabled/offline and then reboot itself once the update is complete. It may take a few minutes to complete the process. 

⚠️ Note: While your AlfredCam is being rebooted, the app will automatically take you back to the camera list. Your AlfredCam will be offline for a few minutes  (you may see error code 7007) before it comes back online by itself.

Reboot Manually 

If you are not able to reboot remotely, you can manually unplug and plug it back in again to reboot your AlfredCam. 

Please make sure to check your LED indicator light before unplugging your AlfredCam. When the LED indicator light is flashing green, it indicates that it is in the middle of updating its firmware. Unplugging during the firmware update or video recording may cause fatal damage to hardware or even fail to save videos. 

Factory Reset AlfredCam 

Resetting your AlfredCam device may be necessary to troubleshoot any issues that you encounter while using it. This could include situations such as changing your current Wi-Fi name or password, moving your AlfredCam to a different location with a different Wi-Fi network, or other situations that require a network reset.

Night Vision (AlfredCam)

Night Vision can be switched Automatic, On, or Off

AlfredCam’s Night Vision functions based on six 850nm infrared LED lights on each camera to show you a clear black and white image even in a dark environment. It allows you to see objects up to 16ft (5m) to 22ft (7m) away, depending on the size of the objects and the light source around them. When Night Vision is set to Automatic, it will detect the light source around the environment and automatically switch to black-and-white vision when there’s insufficient light. 

Night Vision: Automatic (Recommended)

When Night Vision is set to automatic, it detects the light source around the camera and will either show the natural color or switch to a black-and-white vision when there is insufficient light. If your AlfredCam is in an environment that does not get consistent light, it is recommended to set Night Vision to Automatic. To turn on this mode, please follow the steps below: 

⚠️Night Vision will be set to Automatic by default for new users.

1.Enter your AlfredCam live session 

2.Find and tap the Moon icon TWICE (shows a letter “A” in the top right corner when it’s set to Automatic)

2.Turn on the Auto Night Vision toggle

Night Vision: On

Turning Night Vision on means the video image will stay black and white at all times, whether it’s daytime or nighttime. If your AlfredCam is in a dark or low-light environment, it is recommended to turn on the Night Vision to ensure that you can always see clear images. To turn on this mode, please follow the steps below: 

1.Enter your AlfredCam live session

2.Find and tap the Moon icon at the bottom menu (icon turns white when it’s on)

Night Vision: Off

When Night Vision is set to Off, the image will stay in natural color during daytime and nighttime. This means that when the light source in the camera’s view is insufficient, the image could be unclear or too dark for you to see. It is only recommended to set Night Vision to Off when there is a constant light source in the viewable area.

What if I’m having trouble pairing my AlfredCam?

Navigating through the pairing process of AlfredCam can sometimes pose challenges. If you’re having trouble pairing the AlfredCam, you may refer to the LED status light as an indicator of your current situation.

The following paragraph will help you find more information and further pair up your AlfredCam:

If the Status LED is slowly blinking Green 🟢, but you’re unable to scan the QR code successfully, please check the suggestions below:

⚠️ AlfredCam only works with 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, please make sure you choose a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi while pairing.

If you hear the following voice command and you see the Status LED fast blinking RED 🔴 and GREEN 🟢, please reset your camera with a paper clip or a pen, pushing the reset button for 5 seconds until you hear a beep, then follow the troubleshooting tips to pair the AlfredCam again.

⚠️Note: The error code and voice command only apply to Firmware version 1.5.0 and above, if your AlfredCam operates in a version lower than 1.5.0 and you’re having trouble, please contact us via the in-app channel.

1.Click on the bell icon and enable the toggle to turn on notifications

How do I set up Alfred’s WebCamera?

Luxriot Evo

Luxriot Evo is a completely free video management software that is focused on delivering top performing software as well as customer service. WebcamXP offers versatility that other camera software don’t. The software is designed to work well with different types of cameras and offers various streaming modes. It essentially takes Internet connection and turns it into a security system. WebcamXP can connect to mobile devices and computers and transmit video in real time or capture stills and short recordings.

SmartViewer

Developed by Samsung, SmartViewer is compatible with NVR and DVR cameras and devices. The software supports up to 72 devices and offers multiple viewing options. Although not an entirely free service, SmartViewer allows a user to view favorites and search the data according to the type of event that happened.

Camcloud VMS

Camcloud is a hardware-free cloud based video surveillance platform providing fast and fail-safe monitoring. The software auto-detects cameras and easily configures each camera for the cloud. The cloud stores all critical footage for up to 90 days and users are able to access and manage their cloud archive through a timeline available on Camcloud’s website and mobile app. Local storage options ensure that even if a camera or site loses internet connectivity, everything will still be captured and can be later reviewed within the cloud.

In this guide, we will show how to reset the password for generic H.264 DVRs, H.264 Network DVRs, or even NVRs. There are a few methods for resetting an H.264 DVR, follow them one by one until you get your problem solved. If not, drop a comment and we’ll try to help you out.

How to Reset Password for H.264 DVR

First of all, let’s clarify what H.264 Network DVRs are. These H.264 DVRs are a generic type of video recorders manufactured by thousands of manufacturers all over the world and are marketed in many brand names (usually when the DVR starts up it will show up there the H.264 logo).

Since there are thousands of DVR brands on the market and the way to reset the password can vary from one model to another.

The first step of doing a password reset on an H.264 DVR is to consult the equipment’s manual or to contact the DVR’s a dealer/reseller, most of the resellers (TVT, Dahua, Lorex, Swan, FLIR, Samsung, Panasonic, Axis, Uniview, Foscam, Zmodo) support their products.

However, sometimes you have an H.264 DVR with an unknown brand and there’s no manual available or no technical support team. If you have lost the password for your non-branded / generic H.264 DVR, you could try the password reset methods shown in this guide.

Below are listed the techniques and the procedures we will deploy to reset the password for H.264 DVR. As you can see, there are four basic password procedures that work on most H.264 DVRs.

1. Try to use the DVR factory default password
2. Use H.264 DVR master password generator
3. Remove the battery to reset the password
4. Use a jumper to reset the passwords
5. Contact the manufacturer

1. Try to use DVR factory default password

Trying to use the DVR’s default password is the first thing for an H.264 DVR reset password recovery procedure. It happens a lot that the original DVR’s password has never been changed. Check the DVR manufacturer’s manual or website for the factory/default password.

Take a look at the table below with the DVR default password for different manufacturers. Perhaps your DVR is listed there (the empty space on the password means you need to leave the password box empty). Also, you can find more default passwords on this link.

2. H.264 DVR Master Password Generator

Many CCTV manufacturers provide master password generators to allow administrators access to their CCTV products. Usually, they use the current date of the security system in order to generate a super password. Others may use the serial number of the equipment.

A lot of the recorders on the market are generic DVRs manufactured in China and in many cases re-branded by third-party companies. Y

You can tell by the user interface which is exactly the same across many brands such as HD iDVR, Everfocus, Everest, Sansco, Luxvision 5716, 6008T-EL, HA-1648, CP-Plus, Citrox, BB-4CH, Yoko, TVT, Super Live Pro DVRs,  Kare, XVIM, and other generic brands simply named “H.264 network”, “H.264 DVR”, etc.

If your DVR has a login screen similar to the one shown below, then most likely it’s an H.264 generic DVR. Keep in mind that the user’s interface color scheme may have been further modified by the re-branding company.

You need to find out what’s the date on your security system DVR. Run the machine and simply check the timestamp on the screen. The date is used by the password generators to create a unique super password. So, take a look at the monitor and note the timestamp (as shown below).

Note: DVR master password generators will work only with specific DVR models.

HiSilicon DVR password generator

If your DVR runs on a chip manufactured by Hisilicon, then you can check the Hisilicon password generator to get a working password for your recorder. This generator works with these models: Hi3511, Hi3512, Hi3515, Hi3520, Hi3531, Hi3532, Hi3521, Hi3520A, Hi3535, Hi3520D, Hi3530A, Hi3535A.

On the internet, you can find 3 versions of the Hisilicon H.264 DVR password generator that work with the models mentioned above. Try all of them one by one until you’re able to reset the password. Below are the links to download the DVR password generators.

How to use the HiSilicon H.264 DVR password generator?

The image below shows an example of how to use this password generator software. Enter the year, month, and day (format YYYYMMDD) that you see on your DVR’s timestamp. Let’s say the date on your screen is 02/17/2020 you have to type: 20200117.

Below is an example of the password generated by the software that should be entered into the DVR, it is unique and valid only for that date (and day).

As we mentioned, this type of password generator app works with DVR models that use a chipset manufactured by Hisilicon (even though the brand name of the DVR may be different). It’s worth giving it a shot.

Dahua DVR password generator

Dahua is a worldwide manufacturer and in many cases, they sell their equipment under other local brands. Download and test it (refer to this article “Dahua Daily Password Generator” for more details). Click here to download the Dahua DVR password generator.

How to use the Dahua DVR password generator

Below is an example of using the Dahua password generator, type the year, month, and day (format YYYYMMDD) you see on the DVR’s timestamp.

H.264 DVR password generator

In many cases, the DVR has an unknown brand. This is a common thing since many Chinese manufacturers sell their DVRs or cameras to third-party companies which they resell under local not-so-known brands or simply as H.264 DVR. In itself, H.264 is not really a brand but just the name of the compression algorithm. You can download the generic H.264 password generator at this link.

How to use the H.264 DVR password generator

The image below shows an example of using the H.264 password generator. You have to enter the date shown up on your DVR’s timestamp.

Excel DVR password generator

This Excel spreadsheet has a built-in formula that can be used to generate super passwords for the H.264 DVRs. It works the same way as the previous methods, you need to enter the date and the tool will generate a master password. Click here to download the Excel H.264 DVR password generator.

3. Remove the battery to reset the DVR

A few H.264 DVRs can be reset by another technique: removing the battery from the motherboard. By doing that, the clock of the system will be reset and the DVR will go back to factory defaults and you can log in by using the default username and password.

How long do you need to have the battery removed? It depends on the DVR’s model number. Usually, it takes 10 minutes for the card to be discharged. So, keep the battery out until the DVR’s internal clock has gone to default. Remove the battery from the DVR as illustrated below.

When the clock runs out of the battery, the timestamp on the recorder goes to 01/010/2000 and you either can try the default password or use the DVR password generator to create a new password based on this date.

Most likely the default username will be admin and password: empty, 12345, or 123456. For old Dahua DVRs, the password can be “000000”.

4. DVR reset using a jumper

In order to perform this kind of reset, you need to open up the cover of your DVR and find the reset pins on the motherboard.  The H.264 DVRs that have these pins are for example old Dahua DVRs, old TVT DVRs, Swann DVR models, etc.

An example is shown below can be reset by closing the two contacts (pins) for 3 minutes. Once you close the circuit (via the jumper), the H.264 DVR will automatically reboot and come back online without any password or just using the default one. Try to log in.

5. Contact the manufacturer

If you tried all the methods explained above but you still can’t reset the password, then as the last option you should contact the manufacturer or seller and ask for technical support. First, locate the model of the unit, google it and see who is the original seller or manufacturer.

Then, contact them via email or phone and provide the model number and serial code. Usually, they help their customers and you may get your problems solved. If you don’t have any receipt, claim that the system was passed to you by the previous owner. They may ask you for an ID which you should provide.

There are 2 types of NVR:

• PoE (Power over Ethernet)
• Non-PoE (this model has no Ethernet ports on the back panel)

Note: If needed, a PoE camera can be setup on a Non-PoE NVR. Please note, since the Non-PoE NVR will not have PoE ports available, the PoE camera will have to be set up on the same network segment as the NVR using a PoE switch or injector. Power over Ethernet models is used when cameras, that also have the PoE specification, need to be powered by being directly plugged into the NVR’s PoE ports and do not require a separate power adapter to work.

A non-PoE model has no ports for cameras to connect to on the back panel but can add cameras with the built-in scan function that finds cameras connected to the same network. A PoE model can also use this scan feature, but additionally has PoE ports to power its cameras. The scan feature allows for compatible IP cameras to be added from the network whether they are PoE or WiFi.

For the purposes of this guide, the setup procedure will be divided between both the PoE and non-PoE NVR types. Each of these sections will have both a hardware setup and software setup portion.

PoE NVR

Hardware Setup

1. Connect an Ethernet cable from your router to the back of your NVR. It will go into the Ethernet port in between the HDMI port and the PoE ports. Make sure the NVR is powered on.
2. Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the PoE ports on your NVR to your camera. This will confirm that it is powered on.
3. Connect a VGA or HDMI cable from the back panel of your NVR to a monitor or TV. Make sure that the monitor or TV is set to the correct input (e.g. VGA, HDMI 1, HDMI 2, etc.)
4. Connect the included mouse to a USB port on the front or back of your NVR.

Note: The network LEDs will start to blink on the back of the NVR when you properly connect the Ethernet cable from there to the router. Any PoE ports on the NVR do not have these LEDs. The same applies to the network LEDs that will begin to blink on the back of most cameras once they’re connected to an NVR’s PoE port.

Software Setup

     1. Please make sure NVR is turned on and then log into your NVR with your NVR’s login credentials. 

     2. Access the NVR’s main menu and go to, Camera in the Management section. In this menu click on the device Search option to search for your device on the network. 

     3. Click the Device Search button, and you can view the searched IP addresses at the top pane of the interface. Double click an IP address or check one IP address and then click the Add button to add the current device to the bottom pane of the interface. The system supports batch adding.

     4. Click the Manual Add button to add a device directly. Here you can set TCP/UPD/auto connection mode. The default setup is TCP.

Note: The manual add function is for Foscam, Dahua, Panasonic, Sony, Dynacolor, Samsung, AXIS, Arecont, ONVIF, and Custom. When the type is custom, you can input the URL address, user name, and password to connect to the network camera without selecting the network camera manufacturer. Please contact your network camera manufacturer for the URL address.

Non-PoE NVR

Hardware Setup

1. Connect an Ethernet cable from your router to the back of your NVR. It will go into the Ethernet port in between the HDMI port and the PoE ports. Make sure the NVR is powered on.
2. Connect a camera to your switch or another router port on the same network as the NVR and make sure it is powered on. The camera must be on the same network for the NVR to connect to it. 
3. Connect a VGA or HDMI cable from the back panel of your NVR to a monitor or TV. Make sure that the monitor or TV is set to the correct input (e.g. VGA, HDMI 1, HDMI 2, etc.)
4. Connect the included mouse to a USB port on the front or back of your NVR.

Note: The network LEDs will start to blink on the back of the NVR when you properly connect the Ethernet cable from there to the router. Any PoE ports on the NVR do not have these LEDs.
