I. What is ANPR

ANPR(Automatic Number Plate Recognition) is a technology that uses optical character recognition on images to read vehicle registration plates. For Milesight, the ANPR algorithm is embedded in cameras, which allows the cameras to recognize, capture and upload license plate images all alone and intelligently.

Notes:

Installation Angle Considerations

To increase the accuracy of license plate recognition, be sure to install the LPR cameras properly to capture the license plates with the correct image size, lighting conditions and camera angle. The following highlights is the precautions of installation angle：

A: Installing the camera in front of the vehicle (Recommended):

The captured image should be filled with a full width of the vehicle.

B: Installing the camera slightly to the side:

To avoid capturing unnecessary contents in the image, the camera should be installed in a higher position(Vertical angle is less than 30°; Horizontal angle is no more than 30°; Tile angle is less than 5°) to capture the front part of the vehicle.

III. Countries/Regions that support ANPR

Currently, we have three kinds of LPR, including LPR1, LPR2 and LPR3. LPR1 is used in Asian region, LPR2 is for European region, and LPR3 is for Korea. It covers over 70 countries and regions.

IV. How to set ANPR with Milesight Network Cameras

1. Settings

Step1: Go to “Advanced Settings” → “LPR” → “Settings” after log in the web. Check the checkbox “Enable License Plate Recognition”, and you can draw the screen to select the areas interested. There will be shown in the blue box as below.

[License]: A license will be automatically assigned to each device.

[License Status]: This column is used to display the status of the license, “Valid” or “Invalid”.

[Processing Resolution]: Default resolution selected is 1280*720. You can choose different resolution according to the network environment.

[Set LPR Detection Region]: You can set up to 4 ROI areas by drawing the screen. If you choose Normal Mode, it supports configuring the LPR detection regions for the current area. If you choose Advanced Mode(Only for PTZ series), it supports configuring different LPR detection regions for different PTZ presets(Only support Preset 1~4 so far).

Note:

• The optimal interval of Milesight LPR cameras to recognize license plates width is within 100-200 PX.

• For better performance, please choose the appropriate resolution in advance.

[LPR Night Mode]: Achieve the best effect of LPR night recognition by adjusting different parameter levels. You can also schedule the Start Time and End Time, and adjusting the level according to the environment.

Step2: Schedule Settings. You can draw the schedule by clicking [Edit] button. And then click [Save] or [Reset] after finishing the setting.

Step3: Detection Settings and LPR Message Post Settings.

[Detection Trigger]: If you choose “Always”, camera will always detect the license plate. If you choose “Alarm input”, camera will only detect the license plate when Alarm Input is being triggered.

[Confidence Level]: You can set the confidence level from 1 to 10. When the confidence level of the license plate is higher than the set confidence level, it will push the license plate image to the logs interface..

[Repeat Plate Checktime]: Set the time interval for repeatedly reading license plates to effectively avoid duplicate identification of parking vehicles.

[License Plate Serial Format]: Formulate identification rules and automatically filter wrong license plate information to achieve more intelligent and accurate license plate recognition.

[Feature Identification]: Check Region, Direction, ROI_ID or All to enable Features Identification, it will display the corresponding information on the logs interface.

Note: Region detection only supports DACH region.

[LPR Message Post Settings]: Check the checkbox to enable LPR Message Post. It will push information to some third-party devices or software that are compatible with ours. Information can be pushed by RTSP, TCP or HTTP.

Step4: Don’t forget to click [Save] after finishing all settings.

2. List Management

Add the license plates to this interface as Black or White type (Black/White List), and then you can set the alarm action for these license plates in the corresponding black list mode or white list mode interface. When these license plates are detected, the camera will respond to your settings accordingly.

[Add License Plate]: Select the license plate type as black or white, enter the license plate number, click the “Add” button, the license plate number will be added successfully.

[Batch Upload]: You can add a csv file of the license plates you want to add, click the “Browse” button to import the form to this interface, click the “Upload” button, the license plates will be added successfully.

Note:

• You can first download the template as a reference in this interface.

• It allows to add 1000 license plates to Black and White List.

[List Search]: Select Plate Type or directly enter the license plate number, click the “Search” button, the corresponding license plate will be displayed in the list as below.

[Export List]: Click the “Export List” button to export the license plates in the current list as a csv file locally.

[Delete List]: Click the “Delete List” button to delete all the license plate in the current list.

3. Black/ White/ Visitor List Mode

Step1: Check the checkbox to enable Black List Mode.

Step2: Schedule Settings. You can draw the schedule by clicking Edit button.

Step3: Set Alarm Action.

Step4: Set Alarm Settings.

After that, when a license plate marked as “Black”, “White”, “Visitor” is detected, the camera will respond accordingly to your settings.

4. Professional LPR Liveview Interface

Milesight LPR camera supports professional LPR Live View interface. You can see the real-time license plate recognition results.

Note:

(1) Upgrade your device to corresponded firmware version.

Camera: V4X.7.0.74 or above.

(2) If there is no SD card or NAS as the storage space, the snapshots of license plate will be temporarily stored locally on the PC, cleared after logging out, and do not support Smart Search which will be introduced in the next part.

5. Smart Search

Step1: Select Plate Type or directly enter the license plate number.

Step2: Select Start Time and End Time, click the “Search” button to achieve fuzzy search, then the corresponding license plates or license plates containing search keywords will be shown on the logs while the complete video and license plate information will be shown on the left of the interface.

Step3: Set Alarm Action.

There are two methods to backup LPR logs.

(1) Backup license plates you want.

Step1: Tick license plates you want to backup and click “Backup” button ;

Step2: Select the export file type, video stream type and video file format, then click “Export” button.

(2) Backup all.

Step1: Click “Export All” button;

Step2: Select the export file type, video stream type and video file format, then click “Export” button.

You can also click the “Auto Export” button to automatically export the logs to FTP, SMTP or Storage.

Note:

(1) Insert available SD card or add NAS to camera as storage. Otherwise, you can’t check the LPR recording and snapshots.

(2) Upgrade your device to corresponded firmware version.

V. How to set ANPR with Milesight NVRs

1. Preparation

Here are some notes you should notice before using ANPR function.

(1) Insert available HDD or add NAS to NVR as storage. (Otherwise, you can’t check the recording and logs.)

(2) Upgrade your device to corresponded firmware version.

Camera: V4X.7.0.72-r16 or above.

NVR: V7X.9.0.7-r7 or above.

(3) Ensure your device support LPR/ANPR function.

(4) Ensure that NVR can get license plate information. Please set TCP as Post Type which is the default mode. It can be set in Camera web page -> Advanced Settings -> ANPR -> Settings interface.

2. Settings

Step1: Go to “Event”->“ANPR”, select a channel and enable ANPR function.

[License]: A license will be automatically assigned to each device.

[License Status]: This column is used to display the status of the license, “Valid” or “Invalid”.

[Processing Resolution]: Default resolution selected is 1280*720. You can choose different resolution according to the network environment.

Step2: Set ANPR function effective time. You can draw the schedule by clicking “Edit” button. Draw the schedule and then click “OK” or “Apply” after finishing setting.

Step3: Set detection parameters including Detection Trigger, Repeat Plate Checktime and Features identification.

[Detection Trigger]: Always and Alarm Input are available. It will only detect when alarm input is triggered if you select Alarm Input.

[Confidence Level]: You can set the confidence level from 1 to 10. When the confidence level of the license plate is higher than the set confidence level, it will push the license plate image to the logs interface..

[Repeat Plate Checktime]: The same license plate information won’t be received on NVR within the time you set.

[Feature Identification]: Check Region, Direction, ROI_ID or All to enable Features Identification, it will display the corresponding information on the logs interface.

Notes: Region detection only supports DACH region.

Step4: Set the detected ROI region which can be up to 4 regions. License plate will only be detected in the ROI regions.

3. List Management

Make a license plate list for your own NVR ANPR system.

Upload license plates and set them with different license type here. 10000 License plates can be added at most.

Kindly note that the list is exclusive for NVR, working with all LPR cameras you add. It won’t synchronize with the list on camera side.

There are two methods to add license plates:

(1) Add one by one.

Step1: Click the “Add” button.

Step2: Input the license plate and select license type.

Step3: Click OK and then the license plate will be added into the list.

(2) Batch upload by importing template.

Step1: Click Download Template button, select USB device folder and click OK to download Template.

Step2: Input all license type and license plate number as Template shows.

Step3: Click Import button, select the file and click OK to add all license plates into list.

4. Black/White/Visitor List Mode

We provide you three modes for better event management.

Black List Mode: Manage event for license plates in black list.

White List Mode: Manage event for license plates in white list.

Visitor Mode: Manage event for those license plates do not have license type.

Steps for settings:

Step1: Enable Black List Mode/White List Mode/Visitor Mode as your demand.

Step2: Set effective time for the mode to work.

Step3: Set actions you need including Audible Warning, Email Linkage, Event Popup, PTZ Action, Alarm Output and Trigger Channels Record.

Notes:

Do not forget to enable these modes, set effective time and record action for corresponded mode, so that you can get real-time video when license plate is detected (Effective time and record action is enabled by default.). You can refer to How to check ANPR record part for detailed record settings.

5. Professional LPR Liveview Interface

At the beginning, you need to switch the preview mode to ANPR mode.

There are two methods to enter live view ANPR Mode:

(1) Right click the mouse and select ANPR Mode as preview mode.

(2) Select ANPR Mode on live view bottom tool bar.

After entering ANPR mode, the real-time license plate information will be shown on the left of the interface once it get detected.

License plate information includes Plate Snapshot, Channel Name, License Plate Number, Detected Time and Plate Type.

Two License types:

No License plates type will be shown if the license plate does not exist in Black/White list. However, you can right click the license plate information to quick add it to Black/White list or delete it from Black/White list.

Besides, you can click the license plate information to check the latest X seconds (10s~20s) video.

Notes:

• X = 10 + Pre Record Time

   You can set Pre Record Time in Storage -> Video Record -> Record Settings interface.

• Make sure that HDD is available on NVR and correct record settings is made, so that you can check the record on live view. Please refer to How to check ANPR record part for detailed record settings.

• Make sure that NVR can get the license plate information. Please set TCP as Post Type which is the default mode. It can be set in Camera web page -> Advanced Settings -> ANPR -> Settings interface.

6. Set/Check ANPR Record

Before checking recording files, please make sure that you have proceed correct settings to make record action work.

(1) Set Recording

Step1: Set Smart Analysis as Record Type in Storage -> Video Record -> Record Schedule interface.

Step2: Enable Black List Mode / White List Mode / Visitor Mode as your demand.

Step3: Set Effective time and Trigger Channels Record action of your selected mode (Full effective time and trigger channel record are set by default).

Then NVR will record when license plate is detected.

Notes:

Generally, record action is triggered by event. If you just enable ANPR function without enabling Black List/White List/Visitor modes nor setting record action, it means you just enable the function while record action is not set. Then no record will be triggered. So it is necessary to do all above three steps if you want to trigger record action.

(2) Check recording

In Playback

Step1: Entering Playback -> Event Playback -> Smart Analysis interface.

Step2: Input corresponded information and click search button to search.

Step3: Click record to play the video searched out.

In Live View

Click the license plate information to check the latest X seconds (10s~20s) video.

Notes:

• X = 10 + Pre Record Time

   You can set Pre Record Time in Storage -> Video Record -> Record Settings interface.

• Make sure that HDD is available on NVR and correct record settings is made, so that you can check the record on live view. Please refer to How to check ANPR record part for detailed record settings.

7. Check/Backup ANPR Logs

(1) Check ANPR logs

Step1: Search on Smart Analysis interface.

Step2: Input corresponded information and click search button to search.

Then you will get a whole ANPR logs list.

License plate snapshot will be shown on the logs list while the complete image video and license plate information will be shown on the left of the interface.

Step3: Click the Play button to play the video

(2) Backup ANPR logs

Two methods are available after searching ANPR logs out.

Backup license plates you want.

Step1: Tick license plates you want to backup and click backup button.

Step2: Select the export file type, video stream type and video file format, then click export button.

Backup all.

Step1: Click backup all button.

Step2: Select the export file type, video stream type and video file format, then click export button.

Then you will get corresponded file as selected export file type.

VI. How to set ANPR with Milesight CMS

1. Preparation

(1) Refer to the NVR section

(2) Upgrade your CMS to corresponded version.

CMS: V2.4.0.7 or above

Step1: Add NVR to CMS.

Step2: Go to “Device Config”, select a NVR and the channel, then enable ANPR function.

[License]: A license will be automatically assigned to each device.

[Set LPR Detection Region]: You can set up to 4 ROI areas by drawing the screen. License plate will only be detected in the ROI regions.

Then NVR will record when license plate is detected.

Notes:

VII. How to set ANPR with Milesight VMS Enterprise

1. Preparation

① Refer to the NVR section

② Upgrade your VMS Enterprise to corresponded version.

VMS Enterprise: V1.3.0.0 or above

③ Only the LPR cameras added by MSSP protocol support ANPR function for VMS Enterprise.

④ Make sure that VMS Enterprise can get the license plate information. Please set TCP as Post Type which is the default mode. It can be set in the Smart Analysis -> ANPR Settings -> Detection Settings interface.

2. Detection Setting

Here the configuration of the camera web side will be automatically obtained. If the camera web side is not configured, you can configure it in the interface of VMS. After the configuration is completed, it will be synchronized to the camera web side.

Step1: Select a camera in the devices list tree, then click  button to enable Detection.

[License]: Only LPR2 and LPR3 need to enter the license to activate the LPR function.

[License Status]: Show present license status, including Valid and Invalid. When the license status changes to be valid, the camera can start detecting the license plates.

[Process Resolution]: Resolution of the stream for LPR analysis, including 1920*1280, 1280*720.

Step2: You can click  button to enable LPR Night Mode. The LPR Night Mode supports the optimal LPR night recognition effect by adjusting different parameter levels. You can choose Auto Mode which can automatically switch to night mode according to illumination intensity, or choose Customize Mode to set effective time manually.

Step3: You can set up to 4 ROI areas by drawing the screen. If you choose Normal Mode, it supports configuring the LPR detection regions for the current area. If you choose Advanced Mode(Only for PTZ series), it supports configuring different LPR detection regions for different PTZ presets(Only support Preset 1~4 so far).

Step4: Schedule Settings. You can draw the schedule by clicking  button, and then click  button after finishing the settings.

[Detection Trigger]: If you choose “Always”, camera will always detect the license plates. If you choose “Alarm Input”, camera will only detect the license plates during Alarm Input is being triggered.

[Features Identification]: Check All, Direction, Direction Region or Region(Only for LPR2) to enable Features Identification, and the corresponding information will be displayed in the ANPR Search interface.

[Enable LPR Message Post]: Click  button to enable LPR Message Post. It will push information to some third-party devices or software that are compatible with ours. 

[Post Type]: Information can be pushed by RTSP, TCP or HTTP.

[HTTP Method]: There are two HTTP push methods: Post and Get.

[Snapshot Type]: Three kinds of snapshot can be chosen: All, License Plate and Full Snapshot. When you choose All, License Plate Snapshot and Full Snapshot will be pushed.

Note: This option is available just for Post HTTP Method.

[HTTP Notification URL]: The camera can use the API URL to send LPR information to other devices when the license plate is recognized. The API URL format is defined by the HTTP Server.

[User Name]: User name for HTTP Server.

[Password]: Password for HTTP Server.

[Camera LPR Port]: This option is available for TCP Post type.

Step6: Click  button to apply all settings.

3.ANPR Preview

After enabling Detection in the ANPR Settings -> Detection Setting interface, you can click  button in the right Function Panel, and the real-time license plate information will be shown on the right of the interface once it is detected.

The license plate information includes Plate Snapshot, Device Name, IP, License Plate Number, Detected Time and Plate Type. 

Two License types: 

—- License plate from Black List

 —- License plate from White List

No License plate type will be shown if the license plate does not exist in Black/White list.

You can right click on the ANPR notification push window to pop up a menu, and choose to add the license plate to White or Black List in the VMS system. If the license plate has already existed in the White or Black List of VMS system, then you can choose to change its type or delete the license plate from White or Black List.

Besides, you can click the license plate information to check the 20s video. (20s = the pre 10s + the post 10s of the license plate event)

Note:

Make sure that correct record schedule settings is made or the ANPR event rules are set to trigger recording, so that you can check the record in the ANPR Preview Panel. You can refer to 7(1) for operation steps.

4. List Management

Add the license plates as Black/White List as needed in the interface, and the license plates without the set types are the visitors. After enabling license plate recognition, VMS Enterprise will automatically receive the recognition result sent by the Milesight cameras and compare it with the black and white list added in VMS Enterprise.

1) Add license plates

You can choose either of the below two ways to add the license plates. 

a. Add license plates one by one 

Step1: Click  button to pop up a Add Plate window, then input the license plate and select the license plate type as black or white list, and click 

  button.

Step2: Repeat the Step1 to add other license plates manually.

b. Batch import license plates 

Step1: Click  button to pop up a Import Plates window. The imported file must be filled in according to the specified format. You can click  button to download the template.

Step2: After filling in, click  button to import the plates file, then click 

  button.

After successful import, you can click  button to modify the corresponding license plate and plate type.

Note: 

The format of the imported license plates file must be csv. 

The CSV must be saved in UTF-8 encoding format.

A license plate can’t be repeatedly added to the plate list. 

Maximum quantity of license plates added in the list is 10000. 

2) Search license plates

You can select the plate types including All, Black List and White List, or directly enter the license plate number, and click the “Search” button, then the corresponding license plates will be displayed in the list below. 

Note: The text searched is a case-insensitive contiguous string.

In addition, you can click  button to refresh the license plate list. And click  button to cancel the filter for the license plate list.

3) Export license plates

You can click  button to export the license plates in the current list to a csv form locally. If you filter the license plate list, only the filtered list will be exported.

4) Delete license plates

Click  button to delete all the license plates in the current list. If you filter the license plate list, only the filtered list will be deleted. You can also click  button to delete the corresponding license plate.

5. Black List/White List/Visitor Detection

Here you can set effective detection schedules for different detection modes, including Black List Detection, White List Detection and Visitor Detection. Only when the detection is enabled and the corresponding schedule is set, the corresponding detection results will be saved and can be viewed in the ANPR Search interface.

Step1: Click  button to enable the function, and then click  button to edit the schedule.

Step2: Click  button to apply the settings.

Step3: If you want to set related actions for ANPR trigger, you can refer to Method2 of 7(1) for operation steps. Then the set actions will be triggered once the corresponding license plate type is detected.

Step4: Once the ANPR event rules which you set take effect, you can check the ANPR event information in the Logs -> Event Logs interface. The event logs contain the event information about Date/Time, Event, Source, Action, Target and Details.

You can set filter condition as you need. In addition, if there is a recording video information about event, then you can click  button to check the event video.

6.ANPR Search

When the Black List/White List/Visitor Detection is enabled and the corresponding schedule is set, and the storage disk is enabled, you can view the corresponding detection results in the ANPR Search interface.

Step1: Check the cameras in the devices list tree, and select the plate type or directly enter the license plate number. 

Step2: Select Start Time and End Time, and click  button. Then the related license plate information will be displayed as below.

Click  button to show Thumbnail Mode.

Click  button to switch to List Mode.

Step3: Click on the thumbnail photo in Thumbnail Mode or license plate row in List Mode under the searched results, then the license plate details will be shown as below. If there is a recording video about the license plate recognition, then you can click  button to play the video or click 

  button to play the video in the playback interface.

Note:

Make sure that correct record schedule settings is made or the ANPR event rules are set to trigger recording, so that you can check the record in the ANPR Search interface. You can refer to 7(1) for operation steps.

Step4: You can click  button to backup the ANPR files you want to a local folder.

Step5: After setting the backup file destination, type and format, click  button to start the file backup. You can click  button to check task backup situation as below.

The backup file of Plate List is csv format.

7. Set/Check ANPR Record

Before checking recording files, please make sure that you have proceed correct settings to make record action work.

Note: 

In the Settings -> System & Servers -> Server Settings -> Storage Management interface, make sure you enable the storage disk you are interested in to store recordings and images of VMS system.

(1) Set Recording

There are two methods to set the ANPR record.

Method1: The record schedule settings.

Step1: Select a camera in the devices list tree in the Settings -> Devices -> Camera Record Schedule -> Schedule interface, then click  button to enable Continuous Recording.

Step2: Set the Schedule, and then click  button to apply the settings.

Method2: Set the ANPR event rules to trigger recording.

Step1: Click  button to add the ANPR event rules in the Settings -> System & Servers -> Event Rule Settings interface.

Step2: Then select the trigger type as ANPR, set the source of trigger, and select the detection mode as your demand. And set the schedule and the Do Recording action. After setting the event rules, click  button.

Step3: Then the event rules will be added to the event rule list. Click   button to apply the event rules. The recording is triggered when the corresponding license plate type is detected. 

Note:

Make sure the corresponding detection mode is enabled and the detection schedule is set. You can refer to 5 for operation steps.

(2) Check Recording

a. Playback 

Step1: Select the camera in the Playback interface, click  button to select the time. 

Step2: You can check Show Event Mask to select the ANPR event, then the ANPR event videos will be displayed in the corresponding color.

Step3: Select the continuous recording or ANPR event recordings searched out on the time bar to play.

b. ANPR Preview

Click the license plate information to check the 20s video. (20s = the pre 10s + the post 10s of the license plate event)

c. ANPR Search

Click  button to check the latest 20 seconds video or click 

  button to play the video in the playback interface. (20s = the pre 10s + the post 10s of the license plate event)

How to upgrade older TKH Security Firmwares

The latest 360v2-series cameras firmware carries “UX“ in its firmware filename, where previously “U“ was used. This change is minor and does not mean much with regards to the functionality of the firmware. However, some older “U” do not allow direct upgrade to the latest “UX“ firmware.

In these cases, an intermediate step must be taken: first upgrade firmware to the nk20210916UX version; after this, the camera will allow the firmware upgrade to the latest version found on the public download pages.

Prechecks

Before the update it is required that the state of the system is known. Not functioning readers, nodes and lines must be noted.

Update

Download the Backup from the maintenance page.

Upload the new iProtect™ version at the maintenance page

• Go to the iProtect™ maintenance page (Click on the gear button on the login screen)

• Install > Upload iProtect (1)

• Click on the “…” button and select the new iProtect™ version at the maintenance page and click on the “Post” button.

When the “Check requirements” button appears, press it and a check will be done. Check the log and see what is needed to continue. This is also a good moment to install the ServicePack.

Click on the “…” button and select the ServicePack you want to install and click on the “Post” Button.

You can follow the installation process at the realtime logging, the Apache2 web server will restart multiple times, this will cause an interruption of the iProtect™ Gui and maintenance page.

You need to wait (10 minutes max) till you see the message below in the Realtime logging.

iProtect™ atlas: Installation ServicePack … finished.

Sometimes a reboot of the server is required, you will see a notification of this in the messages.

Install the new iProtect™ version at the maintenance page 

• Click on the “Check Requirements” button.

• if the check is passed you get a “Start Upgrade” button and can start the update by a click on this button.

You can follow the installation at the User interface logging, if you see the messages below the Gui is ready and you can login in iProtect™ again (only the root user can login at this point)

You must delete browser history before logging in to iProtect.

Activating lines

To be sure all lines and nodes gets the latest software, select the system default Provisioner group.

• Go to iProtect™ menu option Installation > Hardware > Line

• Select System default at the Provisioner group options.

The components under the line config will automatically be provided with the latest firmware version.

Activate the line’s now, the Door controllers will get the new software and start with the installation automatically. The doors will be non-functional for 5-10 minutes. Open doors beforehand if they are critical.

Finishing the update

When all lines are updated and the re-index message is gone, you can finish the update with the button in the menu:

Installation > Database restore > Activate line

4K Smart Deterrence IP Camera – Troubleshooting

The following are some of the most common issues and troubleshooting tips for the 4K Smart Deterrence IP Cameras

No picture/signal

• Ensure the camera is connected to a compatible NVR. For full compatibility, visit lorex.com/compatibility.
• The camera may take up to 1 minute to power up after being connected to the NVR. Wait two minutes before following the steps below.
• Ensure the camera is connected to your NVR or to your local network.
• If you are not using PoE, you must connect the camera to a 12V DC power adapter (not included).
• If the camera is connected to the LAN, you must search your network for cameras using the NVR. See the NVR’s instruction manual.
• Ensure your NVR is properly connected to a monitor.
• There may be an issue with your extension cable run. Connect the camera to the NVR using a different Ethernet cable.

Picture does not appear to be 4K

• To ensure that you are viewing camera video in full 4K resolution (4K monitor required), check the video output resolution of your NVR.

Picture is too bright

• Ensure your camera isn’t pointed directly at a source of light (e.g., sun or spot light).
• Move your camera to a different location.
• Check the brightness and contrast settings on the NVR.

Picture is too dark

• Check the brightness and contrast settings on the NVR.

Night vision is not working

• The night vision activates when light levels drop. The area may have too much light.

Bright spot in video when viewing camera at night

• Night vision reflects when pointing a camera through a window. Move the camera to a different location.

Picture is not clear.

• Check the camera lens for dirt, dust, spiderwebs. Clean the lens with a soft, clean cloth.
• Make sure that the cable run is within the limitations specified in the section ‘Cable extension options’.
• Remove the vinyl film from the camera lens when your installation is complete.

Picture is in color in in dark conditions

• This camera’s image sensor is extra sensitive to light, meaning that the camera stays in color mode at low-light conditions. Follow these instructions to switch to night mode:

1. Lauch the Lorex Home app.
2. From the Devices screen, tap   icon to configure device settings.
3. Tap   icon to disable Auto Night Vision.

Note: Disabling Auto Night Vision will force the camera into Color Night Vision mode. Recommended in low-light conditions.

The camera siren is not switching on automatically

• Ensure the active areas and schedule for white light deterrence are set properly. The default schedule for the warning light is night times (between 5PM and 7AM).

The camera warning light is not switching on automatically

• The camera siren cannot switch on automatically. You can control the camera siren manually using a compatible Lorex NVR or app.
• Ensure that you have enabled and configured white light deterrence using a compatible NVR.

No audio

• Audio is only supported on Lorex NVRs. For a list of compatible NVRs, visit lorex.com/compatibility.
• Ensure NVR volume is turned on/turned up.
• Ensure audio function on camera is turned on.
• Ensure audio is turned up on viewing device.

Two-way talk not working

• Use the Lorex app specified in your NVR documentation to activate two-way talk.
• Tap   from the camera’s live view, then speak into the microphone on your mobile device. Tap again when finished speaking.

4K Smart Deterrence IP Dome Camera with Smart Motion Detection Plus – Installation

This article provides instructions on how to install and connect 4K Smart Deterrence IP Dome Camera with Smart Motion Detection Plus (E893DD Series) to the NVR.

Before Installing

• Test your camera prior to selecting a permanent mounting location by temporarily connecting the camera and cable to your NVR.
• Decide whether to run the cables through the wall/ceiling (drilling required) or along the wall/ceiling. If you run the cables along the wall/ceiling, you must run the cable through the cable notch located on the camera base (see figure below). This will keep the camera base flush to the surface when mounted.

Installing 4K Smart Deterrence IP Dome Camera

1. Use the included mounting template to mark holes for the screws and camera cable.
2. Drill holes for the screws and camera cable. Insert the optional anchors if installing in drywall.
3. Feed the camera cable through the camera base. If you are running cables along a wall/ceiling, make sure to pass the cable through the cable notch.
4. Connect cables as shown in “Connecting the camera”, pages 10-11.
5. Use a Philips screwdriver and the screws to attach the camera base to the mounting surface.
6. Angle the dome camera and cover as shown in the figure below.

1. Use the included Allen key to tighten the dome camera firmly onto the camera base.
2. Remove the vinyl film from the camera lens once your installation is complete.

Connecting 4K Smart Deterrence IP Dome Camera

Connect the cameras and cables to your NVR using one of the following two setup methods.

1. Connect cameras directly to the NVR (recommended)

Connect the Ethernet cable to the camera and then connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the NVR’s PoE ports. The camera may take a minute to power on after being connected.

Note: A 12V DC power adapter (model#: ACCPWR12V1, not included) is only required if connecting the camera’s Ethernet cable to a router or switch that does not support PoE.

Notes:

• The smart deterrence camera is only compatible with select NVRs. For a list of compatible NVRs, visit lorextechnology.com/compatibility.
• You must connect the camera to a supporting H.265 NVR to take advantage of H.265 compression. For instructions on enabling H.265 compression, visit How do I enable H.265 compression?

2. Connect cameras to a PoE switch or router on your network (not included)

Connect the Ethernet cable to the camera and then connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to a router or switch on your network. See your NVR manual for details on connecting the camera to your NVR using a router or switch.

Using the RJ45 cable gland (optional)

The pre-attached RJ45 cable gland covers both the camera’s Ethernet connector and the RJ45 plug to provide weather-resistance and protection from dust, dirt and other environmental contaminants.

To use the RJ45 cable gland, twist the RJ45 cable gland barrel securely onto the camera’s Ethernet connector.

Tip: The RJ45 cable gland is weather-resistant. Seal the cap with silicone and/or electrical tape for additional sealing if it will be exposed to precipitation regularly.

Cable extension options

You can extend the Ethernet cable run for your camera up to 300ft (91m). To extend the cable run beyond 300ft (91m), a switch will be required (sold separately). Use an RJ45 coupler or a network switch (not included) to connect male ends of Ethernet cables together. We recommend using UL CMR approved cables available at lorex.com.

• Cable type: CAT5e (or higher) Ethernet cable
• Max. cable run distance: 300ft (91m)

4K Ultra HD Smart Deterrence IP Camera – Getting Started

This article provides instructions on how to setup the 4K Ultra HD Smart Deterrence IP Camera (E893AB Series).

Important Installation Guidelines

The optimal installation location, including the height and angle of your camera, will depend on the type of detection settings that you want to enable. Since the optimal angle for person and vehicle detection is different from the optimal angle for face detection, you will need to select one approach.

Note: You cannot enable both face detection and person and vehicle detection at the same time.

Based on your detection preference choose between:

1. Optimizing person and vehicle detection accuracy

• Choose a location where objects of interest will be no further than 50ft (15m) from the camera.
• Install the camera between 8-16ft (2.5-5m) off the ground.
• Angle the camera between 30-60° down from the level position.
• Optimal accuracy for objects of interest appear in the bottom 2/3 of the camera image.
• Point the camera where there is the least amount of obstructions (i.e. tree branches).

Accuracy of person and vehicle detection

Accuracy will be influenced by multiple factors, such as the object’s distance from the camera, the size of the object, and the height and angle of the camera. Night vision will also impact the accuracy of detection.

2. Optimizing face and mask detection accuracy

• Install in a bright area and avoid facing direct sunlight with strong backlights and dark shadows.
• Choose a location where objects of interest will be no further than 15ft (4.5m) from the camera.
• Position the camera 10ft (3m) off the ground to detect the full proportion of a face.
• Angle the camera around 15° down from the level position.
• Point the camera directly where objects of interest will be facing.

Note: Facial recording without consent is illegal in certain jurisdictions. Lorex Technology does not assume liability for any use of its product that fails to conform with local laws.

High accuracy Vs. low accuracy face detection

Accuracy will be influenced by lighting conditions and the distance/angle of a person’s face to the camera.

• To distinguish facial features, the camera must be positioned head on with a clear view of a person’s face. Obscured and partially/fully covered faces will not be accurately captured.
• To improve the range of face detection in low light conditions, color night vision will switch to black & white. If you cannot meet these requirements for installation, it may be best to follow the guidelines for person and vehicle detection instead.

Mask detection

With face detection enabled, you can set the alarm type to detect if a person is not wearing a mask. A person not wearing a mask or improperly wearing a mask will be captured in the face preview sidebar and a notification will be sent through the Lorex Home App.

• Enable Mask Detect and Auto-response to remind a non-mask wearer to: “Please wear your face mask”.

Step 1: Unbox the appliance which should contain the following items

• Spot IVR Appliance
• 2 x Ethernet Cables
• Power Cord

Note: The serial number printed on the spot sticker will start with “sn”.

Step 2: Finding and connecting to the network where your existing cameras are connected to

Find your cameras and follow the ethernet cord.  It should lead you to a network switch or the back of your existing NVR. 

Once you have found the network switch where your camera is connected, use the ethernet cord provided with the IVR to connect the IVR to the network switch. Plug the power cord into the back of the Spot AI IVR and plug it into an appropriate outlet. 

Note: Make note of the serial number printed on the Spot sticker, it will start with “sn” and will be needed later.

Important: Please be sure to press the power button on the front of the Spot Appliance to power it on. 

Congratulations – you have powered on your Spot AI IVR, found your camera network, and connected the Spot AI IVR to the camera network.

Step 3: Ensuring the IVR has an internet connection

1. Log in to the Spot AI Dashboard at https://dashboard.spotai.co

2. Navigate to the Configure link at the top of the page and then click on Locations

3a. If the location isn’t created, click on ‘Create a New Location’, enter the location details, and then click Save and Continue.  On the next screen, enter the serial number starting with “sn”, and click Register Appliance.  We provide an example of what the serial number will look like in the text field and you can find it on a sticker placed on your appliance.

3b. If the location is already created, click on Edit, and under Appliances enter the serial number of the appliance that you just installed (starting with “sn”) and click ‘Register Appliance’.

Here’s a quick video walking you through setting up a new location:

If you get two green check-boxes as shown in the image above, you have completed installing the appliance – Congratulations!  

Step 4: If the appliance shows “Not connected”

The “Not connected” message on a freshly started appliance may indicate that there is more than one subnet in your network.  For example, the cameras might have an IP address of 192.168.x.y, whereas other equipment may have an address of 10.0.a.b.  Typically this is seen with having more than one switch in the environment.  In this situation, connect the second ethernet cable to the Spot AI appliance’s second ethernet port (at the back of the appliance) and connect the other end to your router or a switch with outbound internet connectivity.

If you are unsure of how to find your router or a switch with outbound internet connectivity, please contact your network administrator or Spot AI Support.

Once ethernet is connected at both ends, wait for 3-5 minutes for the green checkbox to appear indicating that the Appliance is “connected”.

If it still shows “Not connected”, it may be an issue with the firewall. Use this guide to verify there are no firewall rules that need to be opened.

Step 5: Add cameras.

Important: Please connect all Appliances for the location before moving on to adding cameras.

This will allow the cameras to be automatically load-balanced between all appliances at the location.

Setting up Dual Network Interfaces

Overview

The appliance comes equipped with two Ethernet ports at its rear. If the first Ethernet link connecting the appliance to the camera network lacks internet access, you can utilize the second Ethernet port to connect the appliance to a different network that provides internet connectivity. This facilitates secure access to camera feeds via the appliance without leaving the cameras exposed to the internet (For an illustration of this, refer to our Recommended Topologies article).

 

Both Ethernet ports on the appliance are interchangeable. It doesn’t matter which port is connected to the camera switch or the internet.

 

Steps to configure Dual NIC

Setting up the physical connections

Step 1: Plug one of the Ethernet ports of the appliance into a network that provides internet access.

Step 2: Connect the remaining Ethernet port of the appliance to the camera network.

If DHCP is accessible on both sides of the Spot appliance, no additional configuration is needed. However, if a static IP needs to be set up on one or both interfaces, refer to this article.

NTP Server on the IVR

Overview

Network Time Protocol (NTP) is a protocol that synchronizes the clocks of computer systems over packet-switched networks. NTP is used to ensure that the clocks of all systems on a network are within a few milliseconds of each other. This is important for applications that require accurate timekeeping, such as video surveillance.

The Spot Appliance has a built-in NTP server that can be used to synchronize the clocks of cameras that are isolated from accessing the internet. This can be helpful for the physically isolated topology recommended by Spot AI.

Configuration

To configure NTP on a camera, you will need to do the following:

1. Identify Spot Appliance’s IP address: Obtain the IP address of the Spot appliance.
2. Access Camera Configuration Page: Navigate to the camera configuration page using the Remote Camera Proxy.
3. Update NTP Settings: Locate the NTP configuration settings. Enter the IP address of the Spot appliance as the NTP server.

4. Set NTP Interval: Ensure that the NTP interval is set to a value between 10 and 60 minutes.

Once you have configured NTP on the camera, the camera’s clock will be synchronized with the clock on the Spot Appliance. This will ensure that the time stamps on the video footage are accurate.

Guide to Assigning a Static IP Address to Spot IVR

While Spot IVR is pre-configured to acquire an IP address automatically via DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), you also have the option to assign a static IP address manually. This guide will walk you through the process of assigning a static IP address to your Spot IVR, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

 

Comparing DHCP and Static IP

Here are the key differences between DHCP and Static IP:

DHCP IP	Static IP
IP is automatically assigned to the device IP may change over time Good for client devices (phones, laptops) where the assigned IP doesn’t matter Requires a router or server providing DHCP IP addresses IP will automatically update if needed	IP needs to be manually configured IP will always be the same Suited for servers where the IP needs to be consistent No DHCP server required If the IP address needs changing, it must be manually updated

 

Steps to Assign a Static IP

To configure a static IP for your Spot IVR, follow these steps:

Step 1: Access Spot IVR’s local troubleshooting page (refer to this article for guidance).

Step 2: Scroll to the “Network Interfaces and Configuration” section at the bottom of the troubleshooting page.

Step 3: Set the IP, gateway, and DNS.

• The static IP address should be in CIDR format, e.g., 172.22.222.5/24, where 172.22.222.5 is the IP address assigned to the IVR and /24 represents the subnet. Contact your Network Administrator for assistance finding an available IP address in your network.
• The gateway is the IP address of the router upstream from the IVR, likely the device that provides your internet connection. In this example, we use 172.22.222.1.
• The DNS server translates human-readable names (like google.com) into machine-readable IP addresses (like 216.58.195.78). Reliable public DNS servers include Google (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4), OpenDNS (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220), and Cloudflare (1.1.1.1, 1.1.1.2). For redundancy, set two different servers.
• If the static IP is intended for the IVR to access the internet, ensure the DHCP toggle is turned off. If DHCP remains on, the IVR will attempt to use a DHCP-provided IP for internet access, even if there is no DHCP address.
• Public IP addresses cannot be statically configured on the Spot IVR.

Step 4: Save the changes by clicking on ‘Save Configuration’

• It may take a minute or two for the changes to be applied to the IVR. Once enough time has passed, refresh the page to see the new IP configuration.

Note: If a static IP address is configured and DHCP is not toggled off, the Spot IVR will prefer a DHCP IP address over a static IP address when reaching out to the internet and Spot AI Dashboard, even if there is no DHCP address received on that interface.

Understanding Camera Discovery Process with Spot IVR

How Spot IVR Discovers Cameras

Spot IVR uses a process called ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) to discover cameras. ARP is a layer 2 networking protocol that is used to resolve IP addresses to MAC addresses. When Spot IVR sends out an ARP broadcast, it is asking for the MAC address of the device with the specified IP address. If the device responds to the ARP broadcast, Spot IVR can then identify the manufacturer of the device.

 

For Spot IVR to be able to auto-discover a camera, they need to be in the same broadcast domain. A broadcast domain is a group of devices that can communicate with each other directly. If the camera is on a different subnet, Spot IVR will not be able to discover it automatically.

 

Once a camera has been discovered, it will be listed on the Spot dashboard. The dashboard will also display the manufacturer of the camera. If the camera is not identified, it will still be listed on the dashboard, but it will be hidden behind a “Show # Other Devices Found” button.

 

The number of ARP broadcasts that Spot IVR sends out depends on the size of the subnet. For example, if your network is a /24 subnet, Spot IVR will send out 253 ARP broadcasts every 30 seconds (254 usable addresses minus which is assigned to the Spot IVR). If your network is a /16 subnet, Spot IVR will send out 65533 ARP broadcasts every 30 seconds. Spot IVR does not send ARP broadcasts for subnets that are /15 or bigger.

 

Here are some additional details about how Spot IVR discovers cameras:

• Spot IVR sends out ARP broadcasts every 30 seconds.
• The number of ARP broadcasts that Spot IVR sends out depends on the size of the subnet.
• For subnets that are /15 or bigger, Spot IVR does not send ARP broadcasts.
• If a camera does not respond to an ARP broadcast, it will not be discovered by Spot IVR.
• If a camera is on a different subnet, it will not be discovered by Spot IVR automatically.

Here are some tips for troubleshooting camera discovery issues:

• Make sure that the camera is connected to the same network as the Spot IVR.
• Make sure that the camera is turned on and that it is configured correctly.
• Try restarting the camera and the Spot IVR.

Troubleshooting an offline Spot AI Appliance

If your Spot AI Appliance is displaying as registered but disconnected on your dashboard, this signifies that the appliance is offline. Being offline restricts the ability to record live video, review past footage, or integrate additional cameras with the appliance. In order to troubleshoot this issue, we recommend the following steps:

Note: We use Appliance and IVR interchangeably.

1. Power Connection Verification: Ensure that the power cord is properly inserted into the appliance’s rear and is also connected to a functional power outlet.
2. Network Connection Verification: Check that a network cable is securely fastened to the back of the appliance and connected to an active internet source. Ensure the activity lights on both ends of the Ethernet cable are operational.
3. Firewall Configuration: If this is your first time setting up the appliance, review our Knowledge Base article on firewall configuration. Confirm that the correct outbound ports and IPs have been permitted through your firewall.
4. Appliance Reboot: Use the power button to turn off the Spot AI Appliance by pressing it for 1 second. Do not depress the button for more than 3 seconds, and do not pull the power cable to reboot. Wait for 30 seconds before turning it back on. Allow 2-3 minutes for the system to fully reboot.

   Note: a reboot requires on-site presence, as the IVRs cannot be rebooted remotely.

5. Hard Drive Activity Check: If rebooting doesn’t restore the connection, look for the hard drive activity light located near the power button on the appliance’s front. If this light is not blinking or illuminating, reach out to our Support team.
6. ISP Modem and Firewall Reboot: Sometimes the ISP modem will cause issues with the Spot Appliance talking to the internet. This could be due to old modem hardware, misbehaving software, or something else. Rebooting will give it a fresh start and clear out any old cookies or caches.
7. Network Cable Port Switch: If the appliance only has one network connection, remove the network cable from the current port on the Spot AI appliance and insert it into the alternative port (the appliance has 2+ network ports).

The Spot Appliance is online when two green check marks appear on the dashboard.

 

If, after implementing all the recommended troubleshooting steps, your appliance remains disconnected, please contact our Support team. Be prepared to provide the appliance’s serial number, which can be found on a white sticker starting with ‘sn’.

Accessing the Spot AI Appliance’s Local Troubleshooting Page

The Spot appliance has a built-in local troubleshooting page that can be used to configure network settings and perform basic troubleshooting. There are a few different ways to access the appliance’s local troubleshooting page.

Remote Access

To connect to the appliance’s troubleshooting page remotely:

1. Navigate to dashboard.spotai.co
2. Click on the Configure at the top of the page
3. Go to Locations on the left menu
4. Select Edit for the location with the appliance
5. Select Appliances on the top menu
6. Select Troubleshoot
7. Make sure the toggle is set to Remote and click Connect to Remote Appliance

Local Access

There are two main ways to connect to the appliance’s troubleshooting page locally:

A. Using the Serial.Local Address

To connect to the appliance’s troubleshooting page locally:

1. Navigate to dashboard.spotai.co
2. Click on the Configure at the top of the page
3. Go to Locations on the left menu
4. Select Edit for the location with the appliance
5. Select Appliances on the top menu
6. Select Troubleshoot
7. Make sure the toggle is set to Local
8. Make note of the appliance’s password in #3 as it will be required to get in
9. Navigate to the URL in #2 where it says “Navigate to https://sn4b-abc123.local/www” by clicking it
10. Once the page comes up, enter the password to access the page

B. Using Static Fallback IPs

If both Remote access and the serial.local address fails, there are unique pre-configured static IPs built into each network interface. To find the IPs configured to the specific appliance:

1. To locate these IPs, follow steps 1-7 under Remote Access and select “Local.”
2. You’ll find “Wire Connection 1” and “Wire Connection 2” listed with two IPs each.
3. The motherboard ethernet port (surrounded by USB ports) corresponds to “Wire Connection 1.” For Spot Business P340, “Wire Connection 2” represents the PCIe card ethernet port below.
4. Note down the IPs listed on the Dashboard.
5. Temporarily adjust your computer’s IP to match the first three octets of the appliance’s static IP and set the fourth octet to be one less. Set the Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0.
   • Example 1: If the appliance’s static IP is 10.170.50.220, change your computer’s IP to 10.170.50.219.
   • Example 2: If the appliance’s static IP is 192.168.78.70, change your computer’s IP to 192.168.78.69.
6. Finally, try to access the IPs retrieved from the Dashboard using the format: https://[IP Address]/www (e.g., https://10.170.50.220/www or https://192.168.78.70/www).

How to check which NVR license and features you have

This article will show you how to check your current IVR license.

1. First login to your Spot AI Dashboard: http://dashboard.spotai.co
2. Once in the Spot AI Dashboard, click on the Maintain tab in the main navigation
3. On the Maintain screen, click on the Appliances tab.
4. From here, if you look at the Appliances screen, your appliances’ serial numbers will be listed in the leftmost column. Find the prefix (the 3–4 characters in the serial number before the dash) and refer to the table below
