How To Enable IP Camera Offline, Analog Camera Disconnection Notification Alerts

One of the most important features of any security system is its ability to alert you when something goes wrong. Whether it’s an IP camera offline or an analog camera that stopped working, a storage failure, or any other exception, you want to know about it as soon as possible. That’s why Camius DVR and NVR camera systems offer various options for setting up alerts or notifications for different events. While cheap IP and analog CCTV camera systems often lack this feature, Camius provides this advanced functionality, setting it apart from other systems.

Exception Settings in Camius NVR and DVR camera systems

Camius NVRs have ‘Exception’ settings under Setup >> Alarm >> Exception, where you can choose the alarm type. These include:

• Buzzer: When this option is enabled, the NVR will emit an internal beeping sound as an alert for any detected events. This audible alert can be particularly useful when you are in the vicinity of the NVR and can hear the buzzer. Follow this guide on how to deactivate the buzzer alarm

However, to use this feature, you need to make sure the email settings in your NVR are correctly set up. Follow this guide for email setup

Regular maintenance can prevent issues like a CCTV camera disconnected, ensuring continuous surveillance. However, sometimes problems may arise that affect the connection of your security cameras. In such cases, you need to troubleshoot the issue and find the cause of the disconnection. Depending on the type of camera system you have, the steps may vary. For analog security camera systems, you need to check the power supply, the cabling, and the DVR settings. For wired PoE power over ethernet camera systems, you need to check the network connection, the IP address, and the NVR settings. To learn more about how to troubleshoot these issues, you can refer to the following guides:

Traditional camera upgrades often entail the labor-intensive process of rewiring the entire premises, which can be time-consuming and expensive. With Camius DVR camera systems, this hassle is eliminated. The compatibility with existing coaxial wiring not only saves costs on new cabling but also reduces the installation time, causing minimal disruption to the business operations during the upgrade process.

Moreover, reusing the same wiring infrastructure does not compromise the system’s performance or reliability. Camius DVRs are designed to seamlessly integrate with the existing coaxial cables, ensuring smooth transmission of high-definition video and data without any loss in quality.

By opting for Camius DVR camera systems, business owners can enjoy cutting-edge surveillance technology without breaking the bank.
The latest R series NVR and DVR recorders facilitate seamless control of Camius spotlight cameras, microphones, and speaker volumes directly from the NVR settings. Additionally, users can conveniently modify the audio encoding format per their requirements. To troubleshoot two-way audio, turn down the input volume and output volume and test switching audio code type (G711A and G711U).

It’s important to note that the two-way audio experience with Camius security cameras is characterized by live bidirectional communication and not an intercom-type function.

In most scenarios, the mute function is enabled by default. By enabling audio, users can record audio from the microphone of their security camera. To listen to the recorded audio, whether in live mode or during playback, it is necessary to open the individual channel in full screen on which the audio-enabled security camera is operating. This applies to both NVR and app usage.

However, it’s crucial to exercise caution while utilizing surveillance audio, as its usage might be restricted or subject to regulations depending on the location. Always ensure to verify with local authorities on the proper and legal use of security cameras with audio to avoid infringing upon privacy laws. Unauthorized audio recording can be considered illegal in certain jurisdictions. Hence, Camius emphasizes the significance of complying with local laws and assumes no liability for the misuse of its surveillance cameras that do not align with the respective regulations.

As one of the newest members of the Blink family, the Wired Floodlight Camera offers heaps of functionality despite its budget-friendly price of $99.

In case the name didn’t give it away, the Blink Wired Floodlight Camera isn’t just an outdoor camera – it’s also a floodlight. And a bright one at that, capable of producing 2,600 lumens of LED light. You’ll also benefit from motion detection, a wired connection that offers a constant power supply, and color night vision. Its design is a bit bulkier than others on this list, but that’s largely due to the massive floodlights that loom over the camera.

Anyone in the market for an outdoor camera that’s both affordable and powerful (and comes with shockingly bright floodlights) should give strong consideration to Blink’s new product. But if you’re looking for something with a more streamlined design, consider looking back at the Ring Spotlight Cam Pro mentioned earlier in our roundup.

With the ability to capture 2.5K QHD footage and built with three adjustable floodlights that product 3,000 lumens of brightness, the Wyze Cam Floodlight Pro is a premium camera that doesn’t carry a premium price. It’s best for capturing large backyards or driveways (thanks to its powerful floodlights), but they can also be dimmed if you don’t need quite as much power.

Rounding out the package is automation that senses when the sun goes down, support for microSD cards to store footage locally, two-way audio, and compatibility with Alexa, Google Assistant, and IFTTT. Because it’s a floodlight, it’s a bit bulkier than most other products on this list, but it’s a great option if you like the idea of filming in 2.5K QHD and want to light up your yard when motion is detected.

The Blink Outdoor 4 takes everything you loved about the Outdoor 3 and makes it even better. The two-year battery life is still here, but you’ll also benefit from a new 143-degree field of view, enhanced motion detection (including person detection), and improved night vision.

As usual, you’ll need to spring for a Blink Subscription Plan to access everything the camera has to offer, but since plans start at just $3 per month, it shouldn’t be a dealbreaker. Toss in a new design, a robust smartphone app, and full support for Alexa, and the latest member of the Blink family is mighty enticing.

Phil Nickinson / Digital Trends

Ring Stick Up Cam Pro

It’s a bit expensive, but you’re getting a lot of value out of this investment. The Ring Stick Up Cam Pro is designed to work both indoors and outside – giving it plenty of versatility. Along with its weatherproofing, the camera offers HDR video and films in 1080p, supports two-way audio, and is easy to install thanks to its wire-free setup.

One minor sticking point is its lack of a built-in privacy shutter. That might be an issue if you’re using it indoors, though you can quickly toggle alerts off and disarm the camera from the Ring smartphone app. But if you have it installed outside, you likely won’t miss the feature. You’ll also want to spring for a monthly Ring subscription to unlock additional features such as cloud saves and smart alerts.

Beyond those minor quirks, there’s not much to dislike about this powerful outdoor camera. Homes with other Ring products already installed will love how easy it is to sync the device with the rest of their smart home, and Ring newcomers will enjoy its high-quality images, simple setup, and generous 155-degree viewing angle.

Arlo Essential XL

The Arlo Essential XL Wireless Security Camera is all about battery life. Capable of running for up to 16 months before needing a recharge, it’s leagues beyond most other products on the market. That makes it incredibly appealing if you’re using it on a second property or plan to put it in a place that’s cumbersome to reach (as you’ll only have to take it down less than once per year).

It also benefits from support for 2K footage capture, color night vision, and a wide 130-degree viewing angle. You’ll likely want to pick up an Arlo Secure subscription so you can get improved smart alerts and 30-day video history – though it’s a bit more expensive than the competition at $5 per month.

The Essential XL is fully supported by the Arlo smartphone app, meaning you can easily set activity zones, view your alert history, or check out a live feed of your camera. And despite all these great features, the Essential XL is reasonably priced. To save even more cash, you can opt for the HD version, which offers all the same features, but ditches the 2K resolution for standard HD.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I place outdoor security cameras?

FBI crime data indicates that most (around 55%) home intruders try to get into homes through either the front or back door. So, you may want to have your security camera scoping out your doors. It’s also a good idea to cover other entry points, like back windows, that are hidden away where someone could break in without being seen.

Where exactly to mount your outdoor cameras, however, depends on your property and your individual needs. You may have a shed in the back that contains expensive lawn equipment, for instance, and you might want to place more focus on that area. Perhaps your neighborhood has experienced a few break-ins recently, and the intruders typically enter through the garage, so you want to cover your garage area.

How many security cameras do I need?

Typically, having at least two outdoor cameras is ideal, not including your video doorbell. If you have a video doorbell to watch your porch, combined with an outdoor security camera covering the front and back areas of your home, this should be sufficient. However, if you have a large property, live in an area where there’s a lot of property crime, or if you have vehicles or valuables stored on your property, you may want to add in an extra camera or two.

Can you use an indoor security camera outdoors?

No. An indoor camera does not have the necessary protection from the elements, so it won’t hold up outside. Some cameras are rated for indoor or outdoor use, and you can use those cameras outside. If you want to point your indoor camera out a window to watch the outdoors, you technically can do so. However, the camera’s features probably won’t work as well, and you’re better off just buying a cheap outdoor camera.

Can outdoor security cameras be used indoors?

Yes, although it’s not usually recommended because the cameras designed for outdoor use may not work optimally indoors. Again, you can opt for a camera that’s rated for both indoors and outdoors, like a dome camera.

Do all outdoor security cameras have two-way audio?

The short answer is no. Many wired outdoor cameras feature two-way audio, which allows you to speak back and forth with someone through the camera via an app on your phone, but not all outdoor cameras have this feature.

If two-way audio is something you’re interested in, consider doing research on which cameras have it, and of the ones that do, read up on which are better. Not all two-way audio is created equal — some companies do it well, while others do not. Keep in mind that cameras with two-way audio might cost a bit more than those that don’t feature the technology.

How well does night vision work on an outdoor security camera?

Night vision on cameras typically uses infrared light to illuminate dark images at night. Essentially, cameras with night vision use this technology to backlight images to help you see what’s happening in the field of view. Most outdoor security cameras feature night vision, but the quality varies from model to model.

If you’re looking for superior night vision, go for the Arlo camera listed above, or research night vision quality before making a purchase.

How well do outdoor security cameras detect motion?

Motion sensitivity in outdoor security cameras varies widely, but generally, the technology works well regardless of the model you choose. Most cameras, even inexpensive ones, do an excellent job of detecting motion, and, if the camera is connected to an app, it will send a motion alert to your phone. Most people find that motion settings on cameras are too sensitive, meaning that things like rain, bugs, or even bright sunlight can trigger an alert.

If you’re concerned about motion alerts, consider buying a camera that not only sends you motion alerts so you can monitor what’s happening on your property but also allows you to adjust the motion sensitivity so that small things aren’t triggering it all the time.

Can outdoor security cameras survive severe weather?

Most outdoor cameras have a rating of IP65 or higher, which means they are waterproof and can withstand someone spraying a hose on them. That usually (but not always) means that a camera with that rating can withstand extreme temperatures ranging from -40 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit or similar.

Cameras vary slightly in terms of survival in extreme weather, but anything with a rating of IP65 or higher will be fine for most climates. If you live in an extremely hot or extremely cold climate, you might want to consider a camera with a rating of IP66 or higher.

Do I have to pay for storage for an outdoor camera?

This depends a lot on the brand and the model. Generally, if a security cam has a memory card slot, you can use native storage without paying anything — it’s just a little trickier to manage. If you want video footage to be uploaded to the cloud for easier viewing and saving, you’ll often have to pay for it. Brands like Arlo and Ring only allow for free livestreaming video and require a plan if you want to save video for any length of time. Google is one of the best options here because its Nest cam offers a certain amount of free online storage without needing a subscription.

Is an outdoor security camera ever illegal?

It can be, although privacy laws haven’t entirely caught up with home security cams yet. Generally speaking, you can’t point a camera where people have the expectation of privacy. Pointing a cam at your porch and the street in front? Totally fine, it’s considered a public area. Pointing a camera so that it captures footage of your neighbor’s backyard or looks into their windows? Illegal, and you could get successfully sued for it.

.

How do I install and mount my Arlo Solar Panel?

There are three Arlo Solar Panels designed to work with Arlo cameras. To know which Arlo Solar Panel is compatible with your camera, visit: Arlo Solar Panel Compatibility

You can use Arlo Solar Panels in any outdoor location that falls within the solar panel’s operating temperature range of 32° to 113°F (0° to 45°C). For safety reasons, the Arlo Solar Panel cannot charge your camera battery at temperatures below freezing.

To set up your Arlo Solar Panel:

Choose a good outdoor location for your Arlo Solar Panel, within 4.5 feet (1.3 meters) of your Arlo camera.
The Arlo Solar Panel can absorb the most solar energy when it is in full sunlight for as much of the day as possible. You can mount the Arlo Solar Panel on your wall, fence, roof, gutter, or eaves. Make sure that you mount your Arlo Solar Panel facing true south (in the northern hemisphere) or true north (in the southern hemisphere).

Secure the mount with the screws provided in the package.

Attach your Arlo Solar Panel to the mount.

Adjust the angle of the Arlo Solar Panel on the mount to the appropriate angle for your latitude.

Make sure that your Arlo camera battery is fully charged.
Note: Your Arlo Solar Panel is designed to keep your camera battery charged, not to charge the battery from low to full.

Connect the Arlo Solar Panel cable to your Arlo camera.

Warning: Do not unplug the cable from your Arlo Solar Panel. This can damage the cable and the Arlo Solar Panel.

Note: The charging icon will not immediately appear in the Arlo Secure app. If you want to confirm that your camera is charging, you can wait for the charging icon to appear, or you can check the camera’s battery percentage in the Arlo Secure app from day to day. For more information on battery charging icons, visit: What do my Arlo camera’s battery level icons and notifications mean?

How do I position the Arlo Solar Panel to get the most sunlight?

The amount of energy that the Arlo Solar Panel can produce depends on several factors: average sun exposure, weather conditions, tilt angle, and dust or debris. A solar panel in the same location might produce a different amount of energy at noon in December than at noon in June.

Similarly, the same panel might produce more energy in one geographic location and less in another. In both situations, the difference is based mainly on the amount of sunlight that the solar panel receives. To see a world map of average sun exposure, visit: http://globalsolaratlas.info/?m=sg:dni

To optimize the effectiveness of your solar panel, do the following:

Choose a location for your solar panel that gets plenty of sunlight; try to avoid spots that are in the shade for a significant portion of the day.

Mount your solar panel facing true south (in the northern hemisphere) or true north (in the southern hemisphere) and tilt it to the appropriate angle for your latitude.

Wipe the panel every few months to remove dust or debris that might affect the solar energy-harvesting efficiency of the panel.

How to troubleshoot Arlo Solar Panel charging issues

If the Arlo Solar Panel is not keeping your Arlo camera charged, follow the troubleshooting steps below.

Note: Charge your Arlo camera before using it with the Arlo Solar Panel. The Arlo Solar Panel is meant to keep your camera charged, not to charge it from low to full battery.

To troubleshoot issues with your Arlo Solar Panel:

Confirm the Arlo Solar Panel is compatible with your camera by visiting the following link: Arlo Solar Panel Compatibility.

Unplug and reconnect the cable from your camera. Check the condition of the cable to confirm there are no exposed or damaged wires.

Make sure that your solar panel is pointed toward the sun and is not obstructed by trees, buildings, or other obstacles.
For more information, visit How do I position the Arlo Solar Panel to get the most sunlight?.

Make sure that your Arlo camera is not in temperatures below freezing.
For safety reasons, your Arlo camera battery cannot charge in temperatures below 32°F (0° C).

Make sure that a battery is inserted into the Arlo camera that you are charging with the Arlo Solar Panel.
The solar panel charges the battery, but it can’t power the camera if no battery is inserted.

Make sure that your camera’s battery is fully charged when you connect the solar panel to your camera.
The Arlo Solar Panel is designed to provide trickle charging to keep your camera battery charged, not to charge your camera battery from low to full.

Reduce your camera usage for a day or two and note your camera’s battery level.
Heavy usage of your camera can drain the camera battery faster than the solar panel can recharge it, especially with poor sun exposure.

Clean the panel with a lightly damp cloth to remove dirt and debris from the surface.

Arlo Solar Panel Compatibility

With the Arlo Solar Panel connected to the camera and receiving average sun exposure, your camera battery stays charged, so you don’t need to worry about recharging it. The solar panel is a great low-maintenance solution for outdoor camera installations in hard-to-reach areas.

Although the Arlo Solar Panel is designed to keep your Arlo camera’s battery fully charged, heavy usage of your camera can drain the camera battery faster than the solar panel can recharge it. The 2-watt Arlo Solar Panel is designed to provide year-round trickle charging to keep your Arlo camera battery charged, not to charge your camera battery from low to full.

How can I receive fewer Arlo devices notifications?

Arlo devices only sends notifications according to the rules in the mode that is currently active. To reduce unwanted notifications, you might need to adjust the position of one or more cameras, reduce motion or audio sensitivity, change your notification settings, or create a custom mode.

To reduce the number of unwanted notifications that you receive:

Position your camera so that it does not pick up the motion that is triggering the camera to notify you.
For example, if Arlo is notifying you about cars passing in the street, aim your camera so that the street is outside the camera’s field of view. For more information about camera positioning, visit: How do I position my Arlo wire-free camera?

Create activity zones for your camera to focus on.
For more information about activity zones, visit: What are activity zones and how do I create them?

If you are unable to position your camera so that the field of view only includes motion that you care about, reduce your camera’s motion sensitivity instead.
You must reduce your camera’s motion sensitivity in the rules for each mode in which you receive unwanted notifications.
For more information about how to adjust your camera’s motion sensitivity, visit: How do I change the motion sensitivity on my Arlo camera?
For more information about finding the right motion sensitivity setting, visit: How do I use the motion detection test for my Arlo device?
If you are receiving unwanted sound-triggered notifications, reduce the audio sensitivity settings on the camera or cameras that are triggering too often.

You can also edit your modes and rules to record based only on motion if all of the sound-based notifications are unwanted.
For more information about changing audio sensitivity settings, visit How do I change the audio sensitivity on my Arlo camera?
For more information about disabling sound detection, visit: How do I enable or disable motion or sound detection?

If you like the amount of videos that Arlo is recording, but you want to receive fewer notifications, either edit the notification settings in your modes and rules or create a different custom mode for when you want recordings without notifications.
For example, you can create a mode that records but does not send notifications so that you can watch pet videos in your Arlo library without getting notified every time your pet moves or makes noise.
For more information about changing notifications settings, visit: How do I set up notifications or alerts?

Arlo Secure Smart Notification Options

With an Arlo Secure subscription, you can use Smart Notifications to select which notifications you receive. You can purchase a plan for multiple cameras, a single camera, or both. This provides a flexible and customizable experience for your Arlo system. You can activate any combination of the following features in the Arlo Secure app to determine what kind of motion alerts you want to receive.

Person Detection. With the Arlo Person Detection feature, you receive real-time alerts when people approach your home. The person detection feature also allows you to search your recording library for videos containing people. For more information about camera positioning, visit: What is Arlo’s person detection feature?

Package Detection. The Package Detection feature allows you to receive rich notifications when your Arlo camera sees a package being picked up or dropped off. With Package Detection turned on in the Arlo Secure app, your camera detects packages as small as a shoe box. For more information, visit: What is the Arlo package detection feature?

Animal and Vehicle Detection. The Vehicle Detection feature detects cars, trucks, buses, motorbikes, and bicycles, and allows you to receive rich notifications when your Arlo camera detects a vehicle. The animal detection feature allows you to receive rich notifications when your Arlo camera detects an animal. It detects any animal larger than a small rodent.

Here is a list of some of the most frequently asked troubleshooting questions about the Arlo Essential Spotlight Camera. For the users’ convenience, the best potential solutions for these specific issues relevant to each situation are listed in detail.

Here is the List of Arlo Essential Spotlight Camera Troubleshooting

Arlo Essential Spotlight camera not recording

Troubleshooting Arlo To record to the cloud, any camera newer than the Pro 2 must have a sub. Local recordings can be enabled if the Essential is synchronized to your base. To watch on a computer, you may need to securely detach the disc, depending on your base. Only the VMB4540 and later bases/hubs may use the app to watch recordings without having to eject them.

Arlo Essential Camera Won’t Connect

Make sure that:
