You may have a shed in the back that contains expensive lawn equipment, for instance, and you might want to place more focus on that area. Perhaps your neighborhood has experienced a few break-ins recently, and the intruders typically enter through the garage, so you want to cover your garage area.

How many security cameras do I need?

Typically, having at least two outdoor cameras is ideal, not including your video doorbell. If you have a video doorbell to watch your porch, combined with an outdoor security camera covering the front and back areas of your home, this should be sufficient. However, if you have a large property, live in an area where there’s a lot of property crime, or if you have vehicles or valuables stored on your property, you may want to add in an extra camera or two.

Can you use an indoor security camera outdoors?

No. An indoor camera does not have the necessary protection from the elements, so it won’t hold up outside. Some cameras are rated for indoor or outdoor use, and you can use those cameras outside. If you want to point your indoor camera out a window to watch the outdoors, you technically can do so. However, the camera’s features probably won’t work as well, and you’re better off just buying a cheap outdoor camera.

Can outdoor security cameras be used indoors?

Yes, although it’s not usually recommended because the cameras designed for outdoor use may not work optimally indoors. Again, you can opt for a camera that’s rated for both indoors and outdoors, like a dome camera.

Do all outdoor security cameras have two-way audio?

The short answer is no. Many wired outdoor cameras feature two-way audio, which allows you to speak back and forth with someone through the camera via an app on your phone, but not all outdoor cameras have this feature.

If two-way audio is something you’re interested in, consider doing research on which cameras have it, and of the ones that do, read up on which are better. Not all two-way audio is created equal — some companies do it well, while others do not. Keep in mind that cameras with two-way audio might cost a bit more than those that don’t feature the technology.

How well does night vision work on an outdoor security camera?

Night vision on cameras typically uses infrared light to illuminate dark images at night. Essentially, cameras with night vision use this technology to backlight images to help you see what’s happening in the field of view. Most outdoor security cameras feature night vision, but the quality varies from model to model.

How well do outdoor security cameras detect motion?

Motion sensitivity in outdoor security cameras varies widely, but generally, the technology works well regardless of the model you choose. Most cameras, even inexpensive ones, do an excellent job of detecting motion, and, if the camera is connected to an app, it will send a motion alert to your phone. Most people find that motion settings on cameras are too sensitive, meaning that things like rain, bugs, or even bright sunlight can trigger an alert.

If you’re concerned about motion alerts, consider buying a camera that not only sends you motion alerts so you can monitor what’s happening on your property but also allows you to adjust the motion sensitivity so that small things aren’t triggering it all the time.

Can outdoor security cameras survive severe weather?

Most outdoor cameras have a rating of IP65 or higher, which means they are waterproof and can withstand someone spraying a hose on them. That usually (but not always) means that a camera with that rating can withstand extreme temperatures ranging from -40 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit or similar.

Cameras vary slightly in terms of survival in extreme weather, but anything with a rating of IP65 or higher will be fine for most climates. If you live in an extremely hot or extremely cold climate, you might want to consider a camera with a rating of IP66 or higher.

Do I have to pay for storage for an outdoor camera?

This depends a lot on the brand and the model. Generally, if a security cam has a memory card slot, you can use native storage without paying anything — it’s just a little trickier to manage. If you want video footage to be uploaded to the cloud for easier viewing and saving, you’ll often have to pay for it. Brands like Arlo and Ring only allow for free livestreaming video and require a plan if you want to save video for any length of time. Google is one of the best options here because its Nest cam offers a certain amount of free online storage without needing a subscription.

Is an outdoor security camera ever illegal?

It can be, although privacy laws haven’t entirely caught up with home security cams yet. Generally speaking, you can’t point a camera where people have the expectation of privacy. Pointing a cam at your porch and the street in front? Totally fine, it’s considered a public area. You can use Arlo Solar Panels in any outdoor location that falls within the solar panel’s operating temperature range of 32° to 113°F (0° to 45°C). For safety reasons, the Arlo Solar Panel cannot charge your camera battery at temperatures below freezing.

To set up your Arlo Solar Panel:

1. Choose a good outdoor location for your Arlo Solar Panel, within 4.5 feet (1.3 meters) of your Arlo camera.
   The Arlo Solar Panel can absorb the most solar energy when it is in full sunlight for as much of the day as possible. You can mount the Arlo Solar Panel on your wall, fence, roof, gutter, or eaves. Make sure that you mount your Arlo Solar Panel facing true south (in the northern hemisphere) or true north (in the southern hemisphere).
2. Secure the mount with the screws provided in the package.
   
3. Attach your Arlo Solar Panel to the mount.
4. Adjust the angle of the Arlo Solar Panel on the mount to the appropriate angle for your latitude.
                  
5. Make sure that your Arlo camera battery is fully charged.
   Note: Your Arlo Solar Panel is designed to keep your camera battery charged, not to charge the battery from low to full.
6. Connect the Arlo Solar Panel cable to your Arlo camera.
   

Warning: Do not unplug the cable from your Arlo Solar Panel. This can damage the cable and the Arlo Solar Panel.

Note: The charging icon will not immediately appear in the Arlo Secure app. If you want to confirm that your camera is charging, you can wait for the charging icon to appear, or you can check the camera’s battery percentage in the Arlo Secure app from day to day. How do I position the Arlo Solar Panel to get the most sunlight?

The amount of energy that the Arlo Solar Panel can produce depends on several factors: average sun exposure, weather conditions, tilt angle, and dust or debris. A solar panel in the same location might produce a different amount of energy at noon in December than at noon in June.

How to troubleshoot Arlo Solar Panel charging issues

Arlo devices only sends notifications according to the rules in the mode that is currently active. To reduce unwanted notifications, you might need to adjust the position of one or more cameras, reduce motion or audio sensitivity, change your notification settings, or create a custom mode.  

To reduce the number of unwanted notifications that you receive:

1. Position your camera so that it does not pick up the motion that is triggering the camera to notify you.
   For example, if Arlo is notifying you about cars passing in the street, aim your camera so that the street is outside the camera’s field of view. For more information about camera positioning, visit: How do I position my Arlo wire-free camera?
2. Create activity zones for your camera to focus on.
   For more information about activity zones, visit: What are activity zones and how do I create them?
3. If you are unable to position your camera so that the field of view only includes motion that you care about, reduce your camera’s motion sensitivity instead.
   You must reduce your camera’s motion sensitivity in the rules for each mode in which you receive unwanted notifications.

   If you are receiving unwanted sound-triggered notifications, reduce the audio sensitivity settings on the camera or cameras that are triggering too often.
4. You can also edit your modes and rules to record based only on motion if all of the sound-based notifications are unwanted.

If you like the amount of videos that Arlo is recording, but you want to receive fewer notifications, either edit the notification settings in your modes and rules or create a different custom mode for when you want recordings without notifications.
For example, you can create a mode that records but does not send notifications so that you can watch pet videos in your Arlo library without getting notified every time your pet moves or makes noise.

Arlo Secure Smart Notification Options

With an Arlo Secure subscription, you can use Smart Notifications to select which notifications you receive. You can purchase a plan for multiple cameras, a single camera, or both. This provides a flexible and customizable experience for your Arlo system. You can activate any combination of the following features in the Arlo Secure app to determine what kind of motion alerts you want to receive.

• Person Detection. With the Arlo Person Detection feature, you receive real-time alerts when people approach your home. • Package Detection. The Package Detection feature allows you to receive rich notifications when your Arlo camera sees a package being picked up or dropped off. With Package Detection turned on in the Arlo Secure app, your camera detects packages as small as a shoe box. For more information, visit: What is the Arlo package detection feature?
• Animal and Vehicle Detection. The Vehicle Detection feature detects cars, trucks, buses, motorbikes, and bicycles, and allows you to receive rich notifications when your Arlo camera detects a vehicle. The animal detection feature allows you to receive rich notifications when your Arlo camera detects an animal. It detects any animal larger than a small rodent.

Alarm Detection. The Alarm Detection feature notifies you on the Arlo Secure app when an Arlo camera hears a smoke and/or carbon monoxide (CO) detector’s alarm. When motion detection is enabled for your Arlo camera, you can choose what type of motion you want to be notified about.

To edit advanced motion alert settings on your Arlo camera: 

1. Launch the Arlo Secure app or log in to your Arlo account at my.arlo.com.
2. Tap or click Settings.
3. Under Arlo Smart or Arlo Secure, tap or click Smart Notifications.
4. Select a camera for which you want to receive Arlo notifications.
5. Tap or click the sliders to choose what type of motion you want Arlo to notify you about.

• People
• Vehicles
• Animal
• Alarm Detection
• All Other Motion

6. Under Alert Options, decide if you want to receive video previews in your motion alerts.

Setting a schedule for your Arlo camera (Optional)

You can set a schedule to activate and deactivate cameras automatically. Schedules recur weekly. For example, the schedule for Tuesday repeats every Tuesday as long as the schedule is turned on.

Arlo is preconfigured with the following schedule:

• Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. All motion sensors are on.
• All other times. All motion sensors are off.

The following instructions are the same if you’re logged in to your Arlo account using the Android app, iOS app, or web browser.

To set a schedule for a camera:

1. Launch the Arlo Secure app or log in to your Arlo account at my.arlo.com.
2. Tap or click Mode.
3. Select a device.
4. Tap or click Schedule.
5. Tap the pencil icon or click > next to Schedule.
   The Schedule page displays.
6. Tap or click Add.
   The Add Schedule page displays.
7. Set the days and times for your new schedule.
   Note: To add an overnight schedule such as 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., you need to add two separate schedules, as shown in the screenshot below. First, add 8:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m., then add 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.
8. Tap or click Done.
   Your new schedule is saved.

Arlo Essential Spotlight camera not recording

Troubleshooting Arlo To record to the cloud, any camera newer than the Pro 2 must have a sub. Local recordings can be enabled if the Essential is synchronized to your base. To watch on a computer, you may need to securely detach the disc, depending on your base. Only the VMB4540 and later bases/hubs may use the app to watch recordings without having to eject them.

Arlo Essential Camera Won’t Connect

Make sure that:

• You’re using a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network to connect your Arlo device. Only a 2.4 GHz band, not a 5 GHz band, can be used by your Arlo device.
• You’re trying to connect your camera to the same 2.4 GHz network that your phone or mobile device is linked to.
• The SSID and password for the network are case-sensitive and must be entered exactly as written. You may view your password before submitting it by tapping the password eye symbol.
• Positioning your camera between 10-15 feet (3-4.5 meters) of your Wi-Fi router during setup. You may move the camera anywhere within range of your Wi-Fi router after it’s been set up and connected.
• (The white LED ring on the Arlo Video Doorbell blinks.) If the camera LED blinks for more than two minutes without successfully connecting to your Wi-Fi network, it may time out. Press the sync button again if the camera times out. Throughout the connecting procedure, make sure the LED is blinking blue.
• To complete the onboarding process, you must hear a chime noise from the camera after scanning the QR code. Continue only when the QR code has been scanned and a chime has been heard.
• Make sure the camera has an active SIM card if it’s a portable Arlo device like the Go series cameras. Make sure the camera is within range of your cell network as well.

Arlo Essential Camera Won’t Connect To App

• Restart the phone/tablet after uninstalling and reinstalling the app.
• Make sure the phone/tablet is connected to the home network through Wi-Fi rather than cellular.
• Restart the base.
• Re-add the base and cameras after removing them from the account.

How to reset Arlo Essential Spotlight camera?

Two ways you can reset your Arlo Essential Spotlight camera:

1- How to Factory reset a camera from your Arlo account?

To factory reset your camera while it is connected to the cloud:

1. Launch the Arlo app or log in to your Arlo account at my.arlo.com.
2. Tap or click Settings > My Devices and select the camera you want to reset.
3. Tap or click Remove Device.
4. Tap or click Yes to confirm that you want to remove the camera from your account.
5. Return to the Devices page.

2- How to Factory reset an Arlo camera with the sync button?

To factory reset your camera if it is offline or does not have battery power:

Unmount your camera and find the sync button. The location of the sync button varies for different camera models:

Pro 3, Pro 4, Floodlight, and Ultra models:

1. Release the camera from the camera housing to access the sync button.
2. Find the sync button on the camera housing
3. Press and hold the sync button for about 15 seconds, until the camera LED begins blinking amber, then let go.  Note: If you accidentally hold the sync button too long, return to step 1.
4. Ensure that the camera LED blinks amber three times.
5. Launch the Arlo app or log in to my.arlo.com.
6. Tap or click Settings > My Devices and select the camera you just reset.
7. Tap or click Remove Device.
8. Tap or click Yes to confirm.
9. Return to the Devices page and tap or click Add New Device.
10. Select Cameras.
11. Follow the prompts to connect the camera to your WiFi network, base station, or SmartHub.
12. If needed, insert the camera back into its camera housing until it clicks back into place.
