How do I install and mount my Arlo Solar Panel?

There are three Arlo Solar Panels designed to work with Arlo cameras. To know which Arlo Solar Panel is compatible with your camera, visit: Arlo Solar Panel Compatibility

You can use Arlo Solar Panels in any outdoor location that falls within the solar panel’s operating temperature range of 32° to 113°F (0° to 45°C). For safety reasons, the Arlo Solar Panel cannot charge your camera battery at temperatures below freezing.

To set up your Arlo Solar Panel:

Choose a good outdoor location for your Arlo Solar Panel, within 4.5 feet (1.3 meters) of your Arlo camera.
The Arlo Solar Panel can absorb the most solar energy when it is in full sunlight for as much of the day as possible. You can mount the Arlo Solar Panel on your wall, fence, roof, gutter, or eaves. Make sure that you mount your Arlo Solar Panel facing true south (in the northern hemisphere) or true north (in the southern hemisphere).

Secure the mount with the screws provided in the package.

Attach your Arlo Solar Panel to the mount.

Adjust the angle of the Arlo Solar Panel on the mount to the appropriate angle for your latitude.

Make sure that your Arlo camera battery is fully charged.
Note: Your Arlo Solar Panel is designed to keep your camera battery charged, not to charge the battery from low to full.

Connect the Arlo Solar Panel cable to your Arlo camera.

Warning: Do not unplug the cable from your Arlo Solar Panel. This can damage the cable and the Arlo Solar Panel.

Note: The charging icon will not immediately appear in the Arlo Secure app. If you want to confirm that your camera is charging, you can wait for the charging icon to appear, or you can check the camera’s battery percentage in the Arlo Secure app from day to day. For more information on battery charging icons, visit: What do my Arlo camera’s battery level icons and notifications mean?

How do I position the Arlo Solar Panel to get the most sunlight?

The amount of energy that the Arlo Solar Panel can produce depends on several factors: average sun exposure, weather conditions, tilt angle, and dust or debris. A solar panel in the same location might produce a different amount of energy at noon in December than at noon in June.

Similarly, the same panel might produce more energy in one geographic location and less in another. In both situations, the difference is based mainly on the amount of sunlight that the solar panel receives. To see a world map of average sun exposure, visit: http://globalsolaratlas.info/?m=sg:dni

To optimize the effectiveness of your solar panel, do the following:

Choose a location for your solar panel that gets plenty of sunlight; try to avoid spots that are in the shade for a significant portion of the day.

Mount your solar panel facing true south (in the northern hemisphere) or true north (in the southern hemisphere) and tilt it to the appropriate angle for your latitude.

Wipe the panel every few months to remove dust or debris that might affect the solar energy-harvesting efficiency of the panel.

How to troubleshoot Arlo Solar Panel charging issues

If the Arlo Solar Panel is not keeping your Arlo camera charged, follow the troubleshooting steps below.

Note: Charge your Arlo camera before using it with the Arlo Solar Panel. The Arlo Solar Panel is meant to keep your camera charged, not to charge it from low to full battery.

To troubleshoot issues with your Arlo Solar Panel:

Confirm the Arlo Solar Panel is compatible with your camera by visiting the following link: Arlo Solar Panel Compatibility.

Unplug and reconnect the cable from your camera. Check the condition of the cable to confirm there are no exposed or damaged wires.

Make sure that your solar panel is pointed toward the sun and is not obstructed by trees, buildings, or other obstacles.
For more information, visit How do I position the Arlo Solar Panel to get the most sunlight?.

Make sure that your Arlo camera is not in temperatures below freezing.
For safety reasons, your Arlo camera battery cannot charge in temperatures below 32°F (0° C).

Make sure that a battery is inserted into the Arlo camera that you are charging with the Arlo Solar Panel.
The solar panel charges the battery, but it can’t power the camera if no battery is inserted.

Make sure that your camera’s battery is fully charged when you connect the solar panel to your camera.
The Arlo Solar Panel is designed to provide trickle charging to keep your camera battery charged, not to charge your camera battery from low to full.

Reduce your camera usage for a day or two and note your camera’s battery level.
Heavy usage of your camera can drain the camera battery faster than the solar panel can recharge it, especially with poor sun exposure.

Clean the panel with a lightly damp cloth to remove dirt and debris from the surface.

Arlo Solar Panel Compatibility

With the Arlo Solar Panel connected to the camera and receiving average sun exposure, your camera battery stays charged, so you don’t need to worry about recharging it. The solar panel is a great low-maintenance solution for outdoor camera installations in hard-to-reach areas.

Although the Arlo Solar Panel is designed to keep your Arlo camera’s battery fully charged, heavy usage of your camera can drain the camera battery faster than the solar panel can recharge it. The 2-watt Arlo Solar Panel is designed to provide year-round trickle charging to keep your Arlo camera battery charged, not to charge your camera battery from low to full.

How to install CCTV cameras in corridors?

When designing an indoor video surveillance system, a common issue involves the control of corridors. The main task involves monitoring the movement of guests and personnel.
The objective of surveillance is to recognize a familiar person

CCTV systems are used to fulfill different tasks. Some of these are defined in national and international standards, such as in the EN 62676-2015, which deals with the tasks of identification, recognition and detection.

For corridor monitoring, a normal detection setting is 125 pixels per meter, since identification is handled at the entrance to the building and simple detection is not enough for post-incident analysis using the video surveillance archive.

The dead zone under the camera

No matter how small the corridor is, it is impossible to eliminate single camera “dead zones” (i.e., zones that are not in the camera’s field of view).

This person in the foreground will eventually step into a “dead zone” and disappear from the camera’s view. Therefore, we cannot guess from this camera whether he will proceed forward through the door to the staircase or turn right to the door of the office.

Information and unnecessary background

We’re generally not interested in the entire image delivered by the surveillance camera. Rather, just the most important aspects, including the observation targets, their recognition, time of appearance on camera, and their further actions. The rest is simply background noise that loads the network equipment with extra traffic and wastes hard drive and archive storage system space. Compare the informational capacity of two images:

These images come from the same camera. The difference is only in the frame format: 16:9 or a frame rotated by 90°, resulting in an aspect ratio of 9:16. This function is supported by a limited number of cameras and video management systems (software controlling and recording video from surveillance cameras), but it is essential for monitoring corridors. It’s commonly known as corridor format or corridor mode.

Keeping in mind that all cameras have a dead zone and that we’re not interested in walls when monitoring a corridor and trying to recognize individuals along the entire length of a corridor (that is, recognizing individuals who we know personally or whose close-up has been registered at the entrance to the building), we can begin to set up our surveillance cameras.

15-meter corridor

For a small corridor, the method of installing cameras at opposite ends facing one another generally works well. This allows you to monitor the entire length of the corridor using only two cameras. Depending on the length of the corridor, you should select the optimal focal length that allows recognition of a familiar person, described in EN 62676-2015 or similar standard, throughout the entire corridor segment.

The camera resolution should be set so that it’s at least minimally sufficient to perform the job at hand. 1.3 or 2 megapixels are generally satisfactory, but a resolution of 4 or 5 MP (or more) may be necessary for longer corridors. That said, it’s necessary to keep in mind lower light sensitivity (the ability to “see” in dim lighting conditions) and ensure sufficient lighting.

Pay attention, as well, to the fact that obstacles (in our case, 2 ATMs) can obscure the field of view. Apart from the above, the corridor may contain additional areas of interest that need to be controlled by individual cameras:

In this particular example, it’s not optimal to control the zone in front of the ATM by the “corridor” cameras. A more effective solution would be to install a separate camera with a wide-angle lens in the immediate vicinity of the ATM.

30-meter corridor

For longer corridors, the camera placement method might be similar, but you should keep longer-focus lenses in mind, selecting them as necessary.

In some cases, it’s better to use the “piggyback” method, in which one camera looks at the “dead zone” of the next one – a typical setup for protecting extended perimeters. This kind of setup allows the video surveillance operator to better survey the area. Noting the mounting direction of each of the cameras on the floor makes them much less complicated to monitor.

However, this method, in its original form, is not optimal for long corridors due to the presence of “dead ends” and the fact that there is nobody to watch over the “dead zone” of the first camera:

Conclusions

The solution to this issue requires at least 2 cameras installed at the opposite ends, one against the other.

In order to minimize the background, namely the walls that don’t need to be monitored, it’s best to use cameras that have a “corridor” frame format setting (9:16).

As a rule, the longer the corridor, the longer the focal length of the camera’s lens should be. The second factor to consider is the camera’s image resolution. It must be sufficient, but don’t be too focused on higher megapixels, which often cause reduced light sensitivity of the sensor as well as an increase of the load on the network infrastructure and storage systems. These are good reasons not to put too much trust in advertising slogans, but instead carefully consider your real needs.

How can I receive fewer Arlo devices notifications?

Arlo devices only sends notifications according to the rules in the mode that is currently active. To reduce unwanted notifications, you might need to adjust the position of one or more cameras, reduce motion or audio sensitivity, change your notification settings, or create a custom mode.

To reduce the number of unwanted notifications that you receive:

Position your camera so that it does not pick up the motion that is triggering the camera to notify you.
For example, if Arlo is notifying you about cars passing in the street, aim your camera so that the street is outside the camera’s field of view. For more information about camera positioning, visit: How do I position my Arlo wire-free camera?

Create activity zones for your camera to focus on.
For more information about activity zones, visit: What are activity zones and how do I create them?

If you are unable to position your camera so that the field of view only includes motion that you care about, reduce your camera’s motion sensitivity instead.
You must reduce your camera’s motion sensitivity in the rules for each mode in which you receive unwanted notifications.
For more information about how to adjust your camera’s motion sensitivity, visit: How do I change the motion sensitivity on my Arlo camera?
For more information about finding the right motion sensitivity setting, visit: How do I use the motion detection test for my Arlo device?
If you are receiving unwanted sound-triggered notifications, reduce the audio sensitivity settings on the camera or cameras that are triggering too often.

You can also edit your modes and rules to record based only on motion if all of the sound-based notifications are unwanted.
For more information about changing audio sensitivity settings, visit How do I change the audio sensitivity on my Arlo camera?
For more information about disabling sound detection, visit: How do I enable or disable motion or sound detection?

If you like the amount of videos that Arlo is recording, but you want to receive fewer notifications, either edit the notification settings in your modes and rules or create a different custom mode for when you want recordings without notifications.
For example, you can create a mode that records but does not send notifications so that you can watch pet videos in your Arlo library without getting notified every time your pet moves or makes noise.
For more information about changing notifications settings, visit: How do I set up notifications or alerts?

Arlo Secure Smart Notification Options

With an Arlo Secure subscription, you can use Smart Notifications to select which notifications you receive. You can purchase a plan for multiple cameras, a single camera, or both. This provides a flexible and customizable experience for your Arlo system. You can activate any combination of the following features in the Arlo Secure app to determine what kind of motion alerts you want to receive.

Person Detection. With the Arlo Person Detection feature, you receive real-time alerts when people approach your home. The person detection feature also allows you to search your recording library for videos containing people. For more information about camera positioning, visit: What is Arlo’s person detection feature?

Package Detection. The Package Detection feature allows you to receive rich notifications when your Arlo camera sees a package being picked up or dropped off. With Package Detection turned on in the Arlo Secure app, your camera detects packages as small as a shoe box. For more information, visit: What is the Arlo package detection feature?

Animal and Vehicle Detection. The Vehicle Detection feature detects cars, trucks, buses, motorbikes, and bicycles, and allows you to receive rich notifications when your Arlo camera detects a vehicle. The animal detection feature allows you to receive rich notifications when your Arlo camera detects an animal. It detects any animal larger than a small rodent.

Alarm Detection. The Alarm Detection feature notifies you on the Arlo Secure app when an Arlo camera hears a smoke and/or carbon monoxide (CO) detector’s alarm. Your Arlo camera records until activity stops or for a fixed length of time. For more information, visit: What is the Arlo smoke and CO alarm detection feature?

When motion detection is enabled for your Arlo camera, you can choose what type of motion you want to be notified about.

Here is a list of some of the most frequently asked troubleshooting questions about the Arlo Essential Spotlight Camera. For the users’ convenience, the best potential solutions for these specific issues relevant to each situation are listed in detail.

Here is the List of Arlo Essential Spotlight Camera Troubleshooting

Arlo Essential Spotlight camera not recording

Troubleshooting Arlo To record to the cloud, any camera newer than the Pro 2 must have a sub. Local recordings can be enabled if the Essential is synchronized to your base. To watch on a computer, you may need to securely detach the disc, depending on your base. Only the VMB4540 and later bases/hubs may use the app to watch recordings without having to eject them.

Arlo Essential Camera Won’t Connect

Make sure that:

You’re using a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network to connect your Arlo device. Only a 2.4 GHz band, not a 5 GHz band, can be used by your Arlo device.

You’re trying to connect your camera to the same 2.4 GHz network that your phone or mobile device is linked to.

The SSID and password for the network are case-sensitive and must be entered exactly as written. You may view your password before submitting it by tapping the password eye symbol.

Positioning your camera between 10-15 feet (3-4.5 meters) of your Wi-Fi router during setup. You may move the camera anywhere within range of your Wi-Fi router after it’s been set up and connected.

(The white LED ring on the Arlo Video Doorbell blinks.) If the camera LED blinks for more than two minutes without successfully connecting to your Wi-Fi network, it may time out. Press the sync button again if the camera times out. Throughout the connecting procedure, make sure the LED is blinking blue.

To complete the onboarding process, you must hear a chime noise from the camera after scanning the QR code. Continue only when the QR code has been scanned and a chime has been heard.

Make sure the camera has an active SIM card if it’s a portable Arlo device like the Go series cameras. Make sure the camera is within range of your cell network as well.
