Hardware Setup

The next section will cover connecting IP cameras with an NVR and the various types of cabling used. Keep in mind that most of our IP cameras use PoE (Power over Ethernet) and will not require a separate power source. All of our IP cameras will come with an optional 12VDC connection built in for those who do not wish to use PoE.

Connecting to NVR using Premade Ethernet Cable

The most popular way to connect an IP camera to an NVR is using a Pre-made Ethernet Cable. The cables are pre-cut and molded so no crimping or cutting is

necessary. Simply plug one end of your Ethernet cable into your NVR system and the other end into your camera’s input. Once the connection has been made, the camera feed will appear after 1-3 minutes.

Connecting to NVR using Custom Ethernet Cable

You may also connect your IP camera to your NVR using a spool of Cat5, Cat5e, or Cat6 cable. We recommend using the T568-B standard for configuring custom cable. Please make sure to use Solid Copper Cabling for all cable runs over 300ft. Use Extended Transmission on cable runs up to 800ft.

Before You Begin

This section will cover the basics of your new SureVision NVR security system. We will cover the basic local operations.

The default username and password of your SureVision NVR is:

Username: admin

The default password is intended only for the first login and should be changed to a strong one containing at least eight characters including uppercase and lowercase letters, digits and symbols after your first login to ensure security.

Startup Wizard

Step 1) First, connect the power cable to the NVR and con- nect the HDMI or VGA cable to your display. Now you can power on your SureVision camera system. If you are planning to view your cameras online through a cellphone you will need to connect an Ethernet cable from your router or modem to the NVR system. Once the system has booted the Login Screen will appear. Use 123456 for the Password.

The system will ask you to change your password. We strongly recommend doing this step. Click Yes.

Step 2) Click Next and Password Modify menu will appear.

This menu will assist you in altering the password on your SureVision NVR system. This is a very important step in secur- ing your system.

You will need to enter the default admin password which is 123456. Enter in a new password for your SureVision NVR. Please make sure this password has upper and lower case letters as well as numerals to make it as strong as possible.

Step 3) You can set your Time Zone, Date Format and Time Format. You may alter your System Time as well.

Click Next when you are done.

Step 4) If you have connected your NVR to your router or modem this menu will show you your IP settings. DHCP is enabled by default but you can change this to Static by removing the checkbox and entering an IP address of your choice.

After completing the Startup Wizard you will be brought to the Main Screen and any cameras that you have connected can now be viewed.

Shortcut Menu

You can right click anywhere on the screen to bring up the shortcut menu. The shortcut menu has

frequently used functions to access them easily. A description of each of these menus can be found in the next section.

Corridor – Choose a corridor mode. Corridor mode can also be set in the Default Layout drop-down list under System > Preview. To display images in corridor mode, the camera must be installed correctly (rotated 90 degrees clockwise or counterclockwise), and then use the Image Rotation parameter under Camera > Image to rotate images accordingly.

Playback – Play the recording for the camera linked to the current window.

Output Mode – Choose a video output mode, including standard, soft, bright and vivid.

Network Settings

The NVR can also be configured to Motion Detection, which is a popular function. This will conserve hard drive space and make it easier to search for events in the future.

Motion detection can be configured differently for each camera and each day if you choose (continue to the next section if you prefer to set up motion detection). If you plan to keep your system recording 24/7 you may skip ahead.

While inside of the Recording setting (Menu -> Storage -> Recording) Click the green box on the right hand column next to Motion. Click and drag on the schedule when you would like motion recording. Apply any changes after they have been made.

Connecting your Smartphone or Tablet

In order to connect to a Smartphone or Tablet you will need to have the NVR connected to a modem or router that has Internet access. We will want to make sure the NVR is con- figured for Internet access in the next section.

Step 1) Right Click anywhere on the NVR’s screen and select Menu.

Step 3) Inside of the Network menu, make sure that the Enable DHCP checkbox is highlighted as shown here. If you make any changes be sure to click Apply at the bottom to save!

Step 4) Select P2P on the top row and make sure Enable P2P is highlighted.

Leave this menu open as we will need to revisit this page when setting up your Smartphone or Tablet.

Now that we have verified the NVR system is ready to be accessed remotely you will need to download the SureVision Application to your Smartphone or Tablet. The App can be found by searching “SureVision” inside of the App Store or Google Play Store. Once SureVision has been downloaded and installed you can proceed to the next step.

Step 6) First time users will have to sign up to use the SureVision application. Select Sign Up at the bottom.

Step 7) Enter a valid Email Address into the top field and click Verify. A verifica- tion code will be sent to the email address provided. Enter the verif- ication code into the field below and click Next.

Step 8) Create a password for your mobile account. Click Sign Up when your password has been entered. Be sure to Check the Service Agree- ment box before proceeding.

Step 9) After completing the sign up process you will be taken to the Apps Home Screen. If you would like to add a new device now click Add.

Step 10) Select the Scan option. This will allow us to scan the P2P QR code.

Step 11) Navigate to Menu ->System-> Network -> P2P. The QR code found in this menu will be scanned using the SureVision App.

Step 12) Use the SureVision Scan feature on the app to scan the QR code found in the above menu.

Step 13) Enter a unique name so you can identify your system when con necting in the future. Click Start Live View at the bottom when you are done entering your name.

Any cameras you have attached on your NVR system will now be accessible through the SureVision app.

SureVision has a built in Help section to aid you in watching live view and play- back footage. It can be found by clicking on the Menu button at the top left

Sharing Your Remote Access with Others

Most users will want to share remote access with multiple people. Each user will need to download the SureVision app found in the App store or Play store and register an account inside of the app. Your new user will follow the same instruc- tions found on page 14 for account creation. Once the account has been created you can share access via email.

Step 1) Start by opening your SureVi- sion Application and clicking the top left Icon and select Devices.

Step 2) Select the “3 Dots” icon high lighted in red next to the device you wish to share.

Step 3) Select Share.

Step 4) Select your Device at the top, select Share To, and then enter the email of your new user. Enter the Valid Period…this is how long your user will have access to the system for. You may grant temporary access or adjust the time for a years worth of access. Last, change the Type to By Role and select the user.

If you have no custom users, the default will be admin. Once com- pleted click Share at the bottom.

Step 5) Your new user will need to add a device on their phone or tablet using this QR code.

Watching Playback Video

The main function of your new SureVision NVR is to record and store video 24/7 or on motion detect. These videos will be stored on an included internal hard drive. Once you are ready to view these videos please see this guide below.

In order to access the Playback menu you will need to right click on the NVR’s Main Screen and select Playback.

You are now inside of the Search menu. From here you can watch all of the playback video stored on the NVR. You will see 3 key areas for watching playback video on the next page:

#1) This section is for selecting which cameras you would like to view. Check the box next to the camera from which you would like to watch playback video. You may select multiple cameras at a time although it is much easier to watch one at a time!

..#2) This section will show you which days have recorded video on them. Days with recording will show up in orange while days with- out recordings will be transparent. Start by selecting which day you would like to view.

..#3) This is your timeline and will show you exactly how much recorded video is stored from the selected cameras on the selected day. You can click around on this timeline to skip ahead or go back. You may also zoom in and out of the timeline by selecting a time on the timeline and scrolling with the mouse wheel.

Backing Up Video

Another important feature built into your SureVision NVR is the ability to backup footage to a USB Drive or External USB Hard Drive. This comes in handy if you have an event you want to keep for your records or an event that needs to be handed over to the authorities. This section will cover back- ing up footage for safe keeping.

First we will navigate to Menu -> Backup menu. Enter Camera Number, Date and Time you would like to backup and click Search.

Be sure to insert your USB Drive at this time. Select which files you would like to backup by checking the box next to the file on the left side. Once all of the files have been select- ed click Backup.

A progress bar will appear on screen to show how much time it will take to backup the files to your USB drive. This could take some time depending on how many files you are attempting to backup at once. When backup is complete you can click OK and remove your drive.

All backup files will be saved as an .MP4 file format, a univer- sal format which should be easily viewed in most modern media players.

It is possible for the files to be backed up from the Search menu as well. This section will show you how to clip video files easily from that Search menu.

From the Search menu click on the Scissors Icon found on

..# 1 in the example. Click and drag the red tabs around the timeline. These tabs represent your Start Time and your End Time.

Insert your USB Drive. After you click the File Management button select the file in the file list and select Backup. You will see a progress bar to show the time remaining.

After your backup is complete you can remove your USB drive and view the .MP4 file on your preferred media player.

Q: What is the default username and password for my Sure- Vision NVR or Cameras?

A: The default username is “admin” and the default password is “123456” without quotations.

Q: Do I need to install my own hard drive?

A: All SureVision systems come preinstalled with your choice of Hard Drive capacity! No need to get out a screw driver for this one.

Q: Do I need a monitor for the system to function?

A: Having a monitor for initial setup is a must. After network configuration you may remove your monitor if you choose to do so

Q: Do I need Internet for the system to function?

A: The short answer is no, you do not. If you plan on taking advantage of the remote viewing and cell phone viewing you will need to connect your SureVision system into a router or modem to use. Basic functions like recording and playback will always function without an internet connec- tion.

Q: How do I get the system to record?

A: Your SureVision NVR systems is designed to record Video as soon as it is powered on. As soon as your camera feed is live on the screen video is being recorded. If your camera is equipped with Audio that will need to be enabled inside of the Main Menu > Camera > Audio > Audio Input as well as Storage > Recording > Audio Storage.

Q: I forgot my password what can I do?

A: If you have the SureVision Smartphone app you can use the Forgot Device Password inside of Me > General > Forgot Password Menu. Follow the steps to help reset your pass word. If you cannot use this method you will need to contact us at support@cctvsecuritypros.com for a temporary pass word. Please note that we will need to verify your original order for security reasons and a reset code may take several days to generate!

Q: Do my IP cameras need another power source? I see two cables coming out of my camera, should both be connect- ed?

A: If you purchased a SureVision kit from us you will not need the extra 12VDC connection. We include the extra connec- tion in the event PoE is not being used. Feel free to tape up the connector or move it to the side as its most likely not needed! Please do not cut this cable as it will void your warranty!

Q: How far away can I run my cables?

A: With SureVision NVRs and SureVision IP cameras you can run up to 800FT+ using Solid Copper Core Cat5e or Cat6 cable. Please make sure to use the correct cable and enable the “Extended transmission” option inside of the Main Menu

Q: My cables will be exposed to the weather…what can I do to stop the weather from getting in?

How to reset the password of the VIGI camera?

If you forget the password of the VIGI camera, you can reset the password via VIGI Security Manager or VIGI NVR.

Method 1: Via VIGI Security Manager

Step 1. Click the Forget Password option.

If the camera is not added, go to Settings > Device > Device List > Discovered Devices, select the device and click the Set Password or + Add > Forget Password.

If the camera has been added, go to Settings > Device > Device List > My Devices > Settings icon of the camera > Basic Information > Device Security > Modify > Forget Password.

Step 2. Send the Verification Code to your Reset Password Email.

If the camera is connected to the internet, click the Send Code and you’ll receive a verification code sent to your Reset Password Email.

If the camera is not connected to the internet, please Download VIGI App in the App Store or Google Play. Scan the QR code with the app and you’ll receive a verification code sent to your Reset Password Email.

Step 3. Enter the verification code and click Next.

How to modify the IP address of the VIGI camera

You can use the VIGI Security Manager or VIGI NVR to modify the IP address of your VIGI camera.

Via: VIGI Security Manager

If the camera is not added, go to Settings > Device > Device List > Discovered Devices, select the device and click the Set Network.

If the camera has been added, go to Settings > Device > Device List > My Devices > Settings icon of the camera > Network Settings > Connection and modify the IP address.

Via: VIGI NVR

If the camera is not added, go to Settings > Camera > Device Access> Add device, select the device and click the Modify IP address.

If the camera has been added, you can modify the IP address via one-click networking option. Go to Settings > Network > Connection and click the one-click networking.

Select the device you want to change and NVR will assign unassigned IP. In this way, you can manually set the IP address. If you want to manually set the IP address, you need to remove the camera and change the IP address before it is added.

How to avoid the overexposure of image

The overexposure of surveillance images can be roughly divided into over-exposure during the day and overexposure at night. The overexposure in the daytime is basically caused by the backlight of the scene, while the overexposure at night is caused by the over-intensity of the infrared reflected light of the object.

Note: Please make sure the lens is clean.

Overexposure in the daytime

The light reflected from the counter is relatively strong, making the counter very bright and unclear

The camera will overexpose in the presence of bright light directed or reflected into the lens. Overexposure will lead to unclear details. During installation, we need to consider scenarios and avoid direct light or strong reflections. If it is unavoidable, we need to adjust the image parameters to alleviate the overexposure.

Step 1: We take the overexposure area as the exposure target and do backlight compensation (BLC), so that the IPC takes the overexposure area as the target to reduce the overall light input. The overexposure area in the figure is near the center, and we set BLC area to be center.

Step 2: After we enable BLC, the IPC reduces the overall light input, so the surroundings will become darker. We can increase the brightness of the surroundings by wide dynamic range (WDR).

Step 3: We can fine-tune brightness and contrast to display the best image.

The following picture shows the adjusted result. (BLC area in center + WDR + brightness 60, contrast 40.) As you can see, the area of counter is clearer. You can further adjust the parameters according to your own image quality.

Overexposure at night

Overexposure due to being next to the wall is quite obvious, as shown below.

When the camera is installed next to the wall, if the angle is too biased towards the wall, the infrared light reflected back from the wall will be too strong, and the wall will be overexposed. If the wall is overexposed, the camera will reduce the shutter exposure time to maintain the overall average brightness of the screen, so that the other part of the screen will be too dark.

Step 1. Adjust angle to reduce the area of overexposed objects in the picture.

Without affecting the monitoring, make the wall area in the picture as small as possible. Firstly, the effective monitoring area can be increased; secondly, if the overexposure area of the wall is reduced, the exposure time of the camera will be increased, and the monitoring image will be clearer.

Step 2. Set BLC area to make dark areas brighter

You can increase the exposure time of the camera by setting the BLC area of the camera. Although the wall or reflective obstacles may be brighter, the effective monitoring area can be seen more clearly.

Step 3. Enable WDR to balance the brightness

Increase WDR can strengthen the details in the dark, and monitoring effect in night vision is better.

Note: Too high WDR will increase the noise in the night vision picture. WDR should be properly increased.

How to upgrade the firmware of VIGI cameras

Method 1: Via the VIGI app

1. On the Live View page, tap the gear icon to enter the Device Settings page.

2. On the Device Settings page, tap on the Firmware Upgrade to check for update or update the firmware.

Method 2: Via the VIGI Security Manager (Windows only)

1. Open the VIGI Security Manager.

What is the difference between 2.8 mm, 4 mm, 6 mm and 8 mm lens?

Lens focal length tells us the angle of view—how much of the scene will be captured—and the magnification—how large individual elements will be. The lager the focal length, the narrower the angle of view and the higher the magnification.

VIGI indoor cameras have a focal length of 2.8/4 mm and VIGI outdoor cameras have a focal length of 4/6 mm. The last digit of the model indicates the focal length of the lens.

For example:

VIGI C400HP-4: The focal length is 4 mm.

VIGI C300HP-6: The focal length is 6 mm.

How to select suitable lens?

The larger the focal length of the lens, the smaller the angle of view, and the farther the monitoring distance. So the camera lens with low focal length is suitable for observing small areas where need a wide angle. If you want to observe the objects closer with a big distance, you’d better select the cameras with a lager focal length lens.

How to rotate the image of my VIGI camera

You can rotate the image via VIGI App, VIGI Security Manager or VIGI NVR. VIGI Security Manager and VIGI NVR has more mirror option than VIGI App.

Here we take VIGI C400HP-4 as an example.

Method 1: Via VIGI App

1. On the Live View page, tap the gear icon to enter the Device Settings page.

2. On the Device Settings page, go to Device Control > Video Rotation.

Never strap, staple or otherwise run networking cable to conduit or raceways carrying electrical current. Never run any cable within 2 inches of Class I electrical lines, lighting, fire alarm, or power lines or devices.

Give a Wide Berth to High Voltage Devices or Lines

Never run any cable within 6 feet of a conductor or fuse box. A minimum 5-inch distance is required from any fluorescent lighting fixture or power line over 2 kVA and up to 24 inches from any power line over 5 kVA. If unsure about the a device or line, consult an electrician. Route cable away as far as you can from large motors, generators, induction heaters, arc welders, x-ray equipment, and radio frequency, microwave or radar sources. NEC/NFPA 70, Article 800-52

Protect it from Future Physical Damage

You might want to put a nail or screw in later and don’t want to puncture your cables, so when a cable, raceway, or soft conduit (anything you can puncture) is installed parallel to framing members (joists, rafters, or studs), furring strips, or crown molding, keep the cable at least 32 mm (1.26 inches) from the edge. NEC 300.4(D)

Don’t Leave it Dangling – Secure Your Cables

You can connect cable directly to a surface with straps, staples, cable ties, hangers, or similar fittings, but you have to secure it somehow. NEC 800.24; 300.11

Use Plenum rated cable in Areas with Airflow

If you are going to run cables through an area which is used by your heating, air circulation, or air conditioner systems (such as above a drop ceiling in an office), you must use Plenum rated cables, which have a special insulation that has low smoke and low flame characteristics. When securing cable in Plenum required areas, make sure your straps, cable ties, and similar fittings also are plenum rated. NEC 830; NFPA 90A

Ethernet Wall Plates

Shelf / Desk Mounting NVRs

This is what most people do: just put it on a shelf or desk. This makes it easy to connect to a TV/monitor and use the mouse (included) to control the NVR.

Rack Mounting NVRs

When to NOT DIY – Get an Expert

Long Distance Wireless

Military-Grade Long-Range Wifi Solution are used when attempting to send wireless IP Camera video data more than 100 feet (and up to 3 Miles). These products will require a professional wireless network technician on location. We can’t offer support on this product remotely, as once we can see it remotely, that means that it is already working.

Aerial Cable

Aerial cable clearance varies based on location (cable over a road needs more clearance than over a sidewalk, for example), needs to be enclosed within 8 feet of finished grade, and requires a on-site structural analysis to make sure the cable won’t break. Hire an expert.

Burial of Cable

Number one, call 811 before you ever dig: know where your power company has buried its power cables! The required cable burying depth also can vary based on your local zoning laws and your certificate of occupancy; you should get an expert.

Elevators

Don’t even try to install any cable in one without a licensed elevator technician’s help as the cable needs to be inside the cable traveler. An error in securing the cable can result in damage to the elevator’s operation – and potentially the people inside it. Don’t mess with it; get a licensed elevator technician to run the cable.

I spent the last two weeks getting to know everything about these cameras and this thread will capture all this information. It will take me several weeks to document all the information so please be patient.

There are a variety of problems that I will try my best to explain and share the possible solutions. I have gotten pretty comfortable with these cameras and have purposely bricked them to various degrees of severity just to validate the recovery process. Most people “brick” their cameras trying to upgrade the firmware. This is not a serious issue and it can be corrected very easily. The camera runs an upgrade service on port 3800. The configTool always shows a default port of 37777 but this is not an issue as it can do the upgrade on port 3800 anyway. Change your port to 3800 and use a firmware file lsted below and you are back in business.

I will keep updating this post as I get more time to write all the details around recovery. I will also post links to over 40+ firmware files that and which cameras they will work with. It will take me a bit of time to capture all this information, so please be patient.

 How to Download and Prepare Firmware

Unbricking your Dahua IP camera (Tips, Tricks & Firmware)

BRICKED CAMERA? How can you tell?

There are several types of “BRICKED” camera conditions and they have varying levels of severity and also varying levels of complexity for recovery. Most are simple and caused by bad firmware uploads. The worst will require a full rebuild of the partitions which load the kernel, software and all other data.

1. The first step in identifying the severity of your issue is to determine what still working on your camera. In order to do that, lets remove as many variables as possible to the troubleshooting process. If possible, connect the camera ethernet and PC ethernet on it’s own switch and make sure that no vlan tagging is enabled on the switch.

Next, you need to figure out if the IP address is still reacheable. Ping the last known ip address. The default address for most cameras is 192.168.1.108.

If you don’t know it you can use the arp/ping method to configure which adds as startic arp entry to a new ip address. (This feature is enabled on the camera by default)

2. Once you have a pingable IP, you need to know what services are still active on the camera. This can be done with a simple port scanner. I have added a link to below in tools.

3. Run the port scanner and record which ports are still open. In many cases port 23 and port 3800 will still be open. If this is your situation, it is a very simple fix. If no ports are open, you will need to do a full image load which is more complex.

The typical ports that you would see are:

23 – Telnet access

80 – Web User interface

443 – SSL

554 – Real time streaming port

3800 – Upgrade Deamon

5000 – UPnP

37777 – TCP Video streaming

37778 – UDP Video Streaming

42323 – Real time remote runner

Plus a whole bunch more of UDP ports and more TCP ports

REPAIR WITH PORT 3800

1A. If port 3800 is open you can connect with the Dahua Config tool (link below in tools). I tdefault to port 37777 but change it to 3800 as this port where the upgrade daemon is listening. Port 37777 is a redirect but it won’t work if your firmware has failed.

Launch the config tool and click on login button. Type the IP address , username and password then port 3800.

Open a know working firmware file and upload to the camera.

1B. If port 3800 is not open, go to the next step to enable port 3800.

2. If you have telnet access, you can login with putty. Link to putty below in tools. The default Web UI password is admin / admin.

In older firmware the telnet account is root / vizxv

In newer firmware the telnet account is admin / 7ujMko0+”web UI password” —> 7ujmko0admin

Once connected you can execute a ps command to see running processes. /usr/sbin/upgraded process is what listens on port 3800 for the firmware binary file.

There is also another copy in /var/tmp/

A useful tip for watching the upgrade process is to kill the “upgraded” process that is running and re-launch it in the foreground to watch the upgrade.

Here you can see each partition being loaded wit the individual img files. I will write a quick how to on loading each one individually at a later time.

If you chose a valid firmware file, you will be back in working order. If you still have problems, repeat with another firmware file till you have a valid file. The IPC-HFW4300S-V2 is not natively compatible with all other 4300S firmware. I am in the process of writing a how to that explains how to over come this issue.

UNBRICK WITH UBOOT via SERIAL

NOTE: This section is coming soon… I’m gathering all the images I need for various camera types

OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION (to be sorted later)

The firmware consists of several images that are loaded into various partitions in flash in a UBI file system. You can load each partition separately if needed. More on this later…. (I’ll put a guide together on flashing and recovering partitions)

Once you telnet into the camera, there are number of useful binaries in the user shell that can help correct and diagnose some of the problems people are experiencing. One of the helpful steps is to kill the /var/tmp/upgraded process and run it in the foreground so you can see what is going on and easily capture error messaged. The /var/tmp/upgraded process is what opens the port 3800 and allows you to connect to the camera with the config tool if your web services have failed. There is also another copy in usr/sbin/.

Also, in there is a command to reset all the parameters back to factory defaults (username, password, ip address back to 192.168.1.108 etc.) This can be accomplished with /sbin/clearparam.

Another issue that people run into is the constant reboot issue. This can be caused by a failed process. The main application which provides all the camera capabilities (web interface, streaming, etc.) is /usr/bin/sonia. This process is what makes most firmware different from version to version (sort of). There are also changes to the web partition which contains the web server pages that /usr/bin sonia hosts on port 80. The sonia process is invoked by a shell script in init.d and if the process is killed, the camera reboots after a few minutes. This has cause many people issues when trying to “unbrick” the camera since you only have a few minutes between reboots.

To stop the reboots you can update the flash. There is a parameter called appauto that tells the camera to auto start /us/bin/sonia. If you want the camera to start and not invoke the shell script that launches sonia, you need to set appauto to 0. This will stop the camera from rebooting when sonia is not running.

This cam be accomplished by running ‘/sbin/appauto 0’. To turn it back on, just run /sbin/appauto 1. This writes the boot parameter in flash that the kernel reads before starting the process. You can check the current status of the appauto bootparameter with ‘cat /proc/dahua/bootpara’ It will only show what the parameter was when you booted up, so if you changes it you need to reboot to see the change in /proc/dahua/bootpara.

You can change the subtype to 1 for the secondary stream also you can add user:password@ in front of the IP address if you have the permissions set requiring it.

You can use the HTTP API to configure some parameters that are not yet in the web UI. For instance, another member discovered he could enable NFS through the web UI in addition to the local SD card. This config is not possible through the web interface as you need to pick one or the other.

These documents details the API of Dahua video products (links provided to some of the versions below). Programmers or users can access and configure Dahua video products through the API. Every setting of the camera is available through the API whereas only a small number are available through the WEB interface. The document with version 1.10 is available with firmware version 2.0 and above. This document with version 1.20, 1.21, 1.22, 1.23,1.24,1,25,1,26,1,27,1,28 is available with firmware 2.210 and above.This document with version 1. 29 ,1.30, 1.31, 1.32, 1.33, 1.34, 1.35,

1.36 is available with firmware 2.210 and above.This document with version 1.37 is available with firmware 2.212, 2.4 and above.

I have also done a bit of testing around the tftp process that is invoked in u-boot that looks for upgrade_info_7db780a713a4.txt and failed.txt. I think with a little more work, I’ll figure out if there is a recovery method using tftp without serial access. This would be necessary if you lose telnet access and need to rebuild the kernel partition that hosts telnetd.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR IPC-HFW4300S-V2 CAMERAS

The new camera appears to have differences (a few that I already found) that makes some of the general firmware incompatible with them. I have found a workaround, but it is complex. I will try to summarize it in a separate thread in the following weeks. I will also repackage the newest firmware files in versions that will work for the V2 cameras. Stay tuned! In the meantime, you can use General_IPC-HX5(4)XXX_Eng_N_V2.210.0000.21.R.20140613.bin or the PAL equivalent to recover your camera.

Well, that’s all I have time to share for now, but I’ll do my best to put together a comprehensive guide to the inner workings of these cameras and a guide to unbrick in any failed software situation.

How can I reset the password for the 2M old 8000 Series and 7000 Series NVR?

This is valid for older models of 2MN-8000 NVR’s and 2MN-7116.

If you have forgotten the password, connect the NVR to the network. Using a computer on the same network, please download SADP Tool and make sure the NVR can be found on the tool. Select your device and a menu will show on the right side. At the bottom, click Forgot Password and a reset password window will open.

Click on Export and email the file to tech support. We will send a file back to you that you will Import File and then create a new password. Make sure you create a Strong password.

This process takes a couple of hours, but the files will be valid for 24 hours. Please make sure the NVR and the computer never disconnect from each other at any time during this process or the process will have to begin again.

What is the default password for the 2M Essential NVR?

The default username and password for the 2M Essential NVR is admin/12345abc. It is highly recommended to change the password once you receive it.

How can I reset the password for the 2M 8000 Series NVR?

This is valid for models 2MN-8004-P4, 2MN-8008-P8, 2MN-8116-P16, 2MN-8232-P16

There are two very similar ways you can reset the NVR password if it has been forgotten, but both methods begin the same way: obtaining the serial number of the device. It can be found in different areas: the sticker on the side of the box, the sticker on the bottom of the device, or when you click Forgot Password on the NVR local screen, and it will begin with “210..” and be 20 characters long (a mixture of numbers and letters).

By clicking on Forgot Password it will open a new window that will show the serial number and ask for the security code. Contact tech support for the security code. Make sure you are in front of the device at the time of calling because it will need to be entered within a frame of time. Once the correct security code has been entered the window will change to enter a new password. It is recommended to create a strong password.

The second method to reset the password begins the same. Obtain serial number → contact tech support → enter security code into the password box. After entering the code another window will open asking for the security code again and the new password.

How can I reset the password for the 2MN-8XXX Series NVR with the new firmware?

This is valid for some NVR models, it depends on the firmware version of them. If they do not have this new password reset method, please go to our other guide for password reset.

There are two possible ways to reset the password with the new firmware. However both need the person to access the NVR either by being in front of it or by access in on the computer (entering the IP address on the browser). The screenshots shown on this guide will be the ones we can get on the NVR itself:

Bring up the login screen by right-clicking anywhere and clicking on the “Menu” option. When you see the login screen, click on the “Forgot Password” link:

After that, either 2 types of screens will come up: The first one is to enter an email address to get a new temporary password:

Please enter a valid email address to get your new temporary password:

The second type of screen is the same as the one it will show when we click “Next” after entering the email address:

When you reach this screen, you can follow one of the following options:

Option 1:

If you have downloaded the 2M Guard App for your phone, you can do the password reset yourself.

Click on the “Local Config” option:

Click on the “Forget Device Password” option and scan the QR code on the NVR screen:

After that, a message will appear saying that the temporary password will be sent to the registered email address:

Click on “OK” to send the password and wait for the confirmation page:

Click “OK” again and wait. The email will look like this:

Take note of the security code and enter it on the “Security Code” field of the Retrieve Password screen (The security code is case sensitive, this means that upper and lower case letters matter):

After entering the security code, press “Enter” and press “OK”. After that, a new pop-up screen will appear to enter a new password on the “Password” field. Don’t forget to enter the same new password on the “Confirm” field:

After that, click on “OK”.

Option 2:

If you don’t have the 2M Guard App downloaded, you can take a picture of the QR code shown on the “Retrieve Password” screen. Here is an example of the picture you should take.

After you take the picture, please contact Technical Support to receive more instructions. We will do the password reset using the QR code picture taken.

NOTE: Please do NOT exit from the “Retrieve Password” screen after you take the picture of the QR code. The security code only lasts for a day, so please keep that in mind before starting a password reset process.

How to Access Device from Web

This guide is valid for models 2MT-4004, 2MT-4008, 2MT-4088, 2MT-4016, 2MN-8004-P4, 2MN-8008-P8, 2MN-8116-P16, 2MN-8232-P16.

When devices are connected to the network, they can also be accessible from a computer. The first thing you need to make sure of is that the computer you are using and the DVR/NVR are connected to the same network (network is coming from the same router for both devices). You will first need to obtain the IP address of the DVR/NVR from Menu → System → Network → IPv4 address.

After noting the IP address of your device, open Internet Explorer and in the address search bar type in the DVR/NVR IP address. If the NVR and the computer are on the same network then it will pull up the login page of the DVR/NVR. The credentials will be the same as when you log into the local interface of your device.

How to Enable Audio

This article applies to our 2M NVR’s models: 2MN-8004-P4, 2MN-8008-P8, 2MN-8116-P16, 2MN-8232-P16.

With 2M NVR’s, you have 3 choices to connect audio with your device:

Once you have successfully connected your microphone in one of those three ways, go to Main Menu → Camera → Encoding → Audio Stream. Make sure the Audio Stream is On and Save. Go back to the Live View so that you can hear the live audio. From the Live View screen, go to the window for the camera that you enable audio for, and hit the Speaker icon. Note: please make sure that the device you are listening to audio from has a speaker (ex. NVR connected to TV through HDMI or viewing cameras from computer with speakers)

How to Find the Serial Number Using 2M Tool

2M Tool is used to find the IP address of your 2M NVR, DVR, or IP camera, as well as limited management of its settings. You only need to make sure that the computer you are using 2M Tool on is connected to the same network as the device that you are trying to search for.

Why do we need the serial number? The serial number is mainly used in case of a customer needing a password reset on their device.

How do we find the serial number? There are a few ways to find the number:

In the case that you forget the password for you device in which you will not be able to access the web page, and the camera is too high up to reach to find the sticker, you can use 2M Tool to find the serial number. 2M Tool does not automatically show the number; you must force it to show. First, you will need to click on the Settings icon to show the options:

Then another window will open where you can select Serial Number to show.

Once you hit OK, the serial number will then appear.

How to Install Plugin for Internet Explorer

This article features screenshots from our 2MN-8XXX series NVR and our 2MT-4XXX series DVR, but the same principle will apply to any other recorder. This is because each recorder requires a plugin in order to view the cameras on the web page. You will have to manually install the plugin, but it is usually always provided as a link for easy access.

First, you must make sure that you are using Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is the only browser that can support these plugins. It is possible for some devices to be viewed on Google Chrome or even Firefox, but then other functions are very limited so it is highly not recommended to use those browsers. Once Internet Explorer is open, and you navigate to the device’s web page by entering the IP address, there should be a link shown on the page. You can see on the picture below that the link is located on the top of the page.

When you click on the link, a pop-up will appear on the bottom of the page that will let you choose whether to Run the program or Save the program onto your computer. Note: Running the program will not save it. If you wish to save the program, please select Save. Once it has finished downloading, then you can run the program from the file location.

If you choose to Run the program, an error message will appear noting that the publisher couldn’t be verified. This is no issue; the plugin will not cause any harm to your computer. Hit Run, and run the installation. Some installations will require you to close out of Internet Explorer in order to complete the setup.

Once the setup is complete, refresh the page, and another message will pop-up on the bottom that asks you to Allow the add-on to run. Select Allow, and log into the page. Now you should be able to view your cameras on the web page.

How to Set Up 2M Guard

2M Guard is the phone app that we use for our NVR’s to view cameras from our phones offsite.

This app only works for models: 2MT-4004, 2MT-4008, 2MT-4088, 2MT-4016, 2MN-8004-P4, 2MN-8008-P8, 2MN-8116-P16, 2MN-8232-P16 and our IP cameras.

How to Set Up 2M Station

2M Station is the PC software to view your cameras on your computer on and offsite. This program only works with models: 2MT-4004, 2MT-4008, 2MT-4088, 2MT-4016, 2MN-8004-P4, 2MN-8008-P8, 2MN-8116-P16, 2MN-8232-P16, and our IP cameras

When first running the program, it will prompt you for a username and password which will be admin/123456 by default. It is recommended that you change the password after installation.

Once you are logged in it will show the menu. Click on Device Management to add any devices. On the left side make sure that Encoding Device is selected. It will show at the bottom of the screen any devices that are online as long as the computer is on the same network as the devices.

There are two methods to add an online device. The first method is fairly simple. All you need to do is check the box for the NVR that shows under Online Device and then click Add. The second method to adding an online device is to manually add it. First click on Add next to Managed Device, and it will open another window where you can input the details of your device. It will ask for:

After putting in all of the correct information of your device, click on Add and then the device should come online.

Another method to add a device is by using the P2P method which allows for a user to view their cameras offsite from any location. The device will be added as a Cloud Device instead of an Encoding Device.

It will show Login and Register buttons that will link to your Star4Live account which will show the devices you have previously added. After logging in, it will take a minute or two for the devices to show online. At first, it will say Offline (Connecting…), but eventually the status will show Online.

After successfully adding all of your devices, go back to the menu and click on Live View to view your cameras. A list of online devices will show on the left side of the window. Click and drag the device into the window view in order to load all of the video. If not all of the cameras are wanted in view, you can click on the plus sign next to your device and it will show a list of cameras connected to the NVR. You can click and drag specific cameras onto the live view screen.

How to Set Up Email Notifications Using Gmail

This is valid for models 2MT-4004, 2MT-4008, 2MT-4088, 2MT-4016, 2MN-8004-P4, 2MN-8008-P8, 2MN-8116-P16, and 2MN-8232-P16.

Gmail will have automatic security settings that need to be disabled before configuring email settings in the NVR. You will need a computer in order to edit these settings. First, log on to your Gmail account and then click on the square icon in the upper right corner of the page. Click on Account.

Security → Scroll to the bottom until you find “Less secure app access” → “Allow less secure apps: ON”

Now that Gmail has been set to allow app access, we can move on to the NVR settings. These can either be configured through the web page or through the NVR itself.

Through the DVR/NVR: Main Menu → Network → Basic → Email

Through the webpage: Setup → Network → Email

After you finish entering all of the settings and the test is successful go to Camera → Motion → Select Camera → Trigger Actions → Send Email

How to Share a Device

This is only valid for models: 2MT-4004, 2MT-4008, 2MT-4088, 2MT-4016, 2MN-8004-P4, 2MN-8008-P8, 2MN-8116-P16, 2MN-8232-P16 and our IP cameras

Each NVR can only be added by one account at a time, so if one wants to add a device onto multiple accounts they would need to share the device with one account being the “main” account. This means that one person will have the device added to their account and that person will share the device with other people. Each person still must have their own Star4Live account.

How to share the device is simple. First, you will need to log onto the main Star4Live account which the NVR has been added to. It can be done either through the computer or your personal phone.

Sharing from Computer: after logging into the account your list of added devices will appear. Click Share on the row for the device you are wanting to share.

Then a menu will appear to enter the account you want to share to, the Valid Till date, User Rights, and any Description you want to give.

Once all of the information has been correctly filled out, click Confirm to successfully share.

Sharing from 2M Guard Phone App: after logging into your Star4Live account on the 2M Guard app, go to your Devices and then tap on the device that you want to share. A small menu will appear. Then tap Share on the bottom of the screen.

The next window will show the device and a list of the cameras that are connected and online. You can choose specific cameras, or select the device so that the entirety of its cameras are selected for sharing.

Once your device(s) has been selected, the Share menu will finally appear. The app will ask for the same information as the computer does, but it will not give a space to fill out a description. Fill out the Share To and the Valid Period the same as you would do on the desktop instructions written above. The only other difference between the Star4Live browser and the app is the sharing Type: you will be able to choose between Role or Function.

NOTE: Only admin rights will allow another user to access the device through the web browser or through 2M Station because they both allow a user to make changes to the device. If you do not wish for another user to be able to make any kind of changes (viewing only), please choose the By Function type.

Once one of these methods have been completed to share the device, the recipient only needs to log into their Star4Live account and the shared NVR should show automatically under their own device list.

How to Sign Up for Star4Live Account

Star4Live is the server that we use to view NVR and camera footage over the web. Each customer needs to have an account to view and manage their devices.

This is only valid for models: 2MT-4004, 2MT-2008, 2MT-4088, 2MT-4016, 2MN-8004-P4, 2MN-8008-P8, 2MN-8116-P16, 2MN-8232-P16 and our IP cameras.

How to Upgrade the Firmware

This article applies to the models: 2MT-4004, 2MT-4008, 2MT-4088, 2MT-4016, 2MN-8004-P4, 2MN-8008-P8, 2MN-8116-P16, 2MN-8232-P16.

Every now and again, we will release a new firmware update that can either hold new features for your unit, bug fixes, or a bit of both. We have made it simple to request the newest firmware so that there is no need to wait for a file to be sent. First, you will need to make sure that your device is connected to the internet so that the NVR will be able to communicate with our servers.

Method 1: From the NVR Interface

Then you will go into the Main Menu and click on Maintain. There will be a section for Upgrade.

There are two options for upgrading:

You will most likely want to choose the Cloud Upgrade option unless you have received the firmware file from Tech Support beforehand. Click Cloud Upgrade, and wait for the device to finish its search. It will either notify you that the current version is already the latest, or it will show a newer version, and the Upgrade button will highlight at the bottom of the screen.

The upgrade time will vary between 1-5 minutes, sometimes lasting longer depending on the size of the update. Once the update has finished, the device will automatically restart. It will be ready to use again once it has fully finished the reboot.

Note: Please make sure that the device does not disconnect from the network or from power because it can cause a risk in damaging the unit if there is a failed update.

Method 2: From the Web Interface

The NVR can be updated from its web page if there is no monitor connected to the unit, or if it cannot be physically accessed. From the web page, you will navigate to Setup → Maintenance → Maintenance → Cloud Upgrade → Detect or Check for Update. The process is the same as it is from the unit itself, and the same rules will apply.

How to Use Star4Live

Star4Live is the server that we use to view NVR and camera footage over the web. Each customer needs to have an account to view and manage their devices. You must use Internet Explorer in order to access all of the functions of Star4Live.

This is only valid for models: 2MT-4004, 2MT-4008, 2MT-4088, 2MT-4016, 2MN-8004-P4, 2MN-8008-P8, 2MN-8116-P16, 2MN-8232-P16 and our IP cameras.

What is the default password for the 2M New Professional NVR?

Step 1: Login to your Synology NAS via a browser​

Step 2: Click the Package Center icon​

Step 3: Search for and install the Surveillance Station software (it should be on the home page of the package center, if not you can use the search bar to find it)​

Step 4: Click the Synology main menu at the top left of your screen and open the newly installed Surveillance Station software​

Step 5: Click the IP Camera icon​

Step 6: Click the add button when the new window open and then click add camera from the drop-down​

Step 7: Select Quick Setup and then click the next button​

Step 8: Enter the camera details manually or click the Search icon next the IP Address box​

Step 9: Check both the Synology Supported Cameras and ONVIF lists (some camera models are not directly supported by Synology, but as long as the camera is ONVIF compliant you should be able to add it to the Surveillance Station software)​

Step 10: Select the camera you want to add from one of the lists and click OK​

Step 11: Check that all the camera details are filled in, including the cameras username & password (also give the camera a unique name to help you identify it from other cameras)​

Step 12: Click the Test Connection button and if the test is successful you’ll get a green tick and a live shot from the camera, you can then click Finish and the camera will be added to your Synology NAS​

If the test is not successful you will have to go back and check the camera’s settings are correct, the most common problem is that the camera has an IP address that is not on your network, after you have followed our instructions from a previous video on how to change the IP address you should get a successful connection and be able to add the camera.

The Synology NVR1218 is a 2-Bay (Reaching a max. of 7 bays, with an Expansion unit) Network Video Recorder, able to support a max. of 12 IP camera channels.
